Why Mitt Romney only does Fox News interviews: 5 theories

CBS News' Bob Schieffer wants to know why Romney is largely ignoring other networks. Here, some explanations

The only Sunday morning talk show Mitt Romney has appeared on this election season is Fox News Sunday, and the other networks are annoyed that the Republican presidential candidate is ignoring their invitations. "I know he does Fox," Bob Schieffer?said to senior Romney adviser Ed Gillespie?on CBS's Face the Nation?this weekend, "but we'd love to have him some time, as would?Meet the Press?and the ABC folk, I would guess." Gillespie replied: "We're going to take our message to the American people," Gillespie replied. "You saw him talking to schoolchildren last week." And it's not just the Sunday shows?Romney is avoiding. Aside from two sit-downs alongside his wife, Ann ? on CBS and ABC ? and appearances on CNBC and CNN, Romney has only talked with Fox News since securing the GOP nod nearly two months ago. Why is Romney sticking with the "fair and balanced" network?

1. He only wants softball questions
Romney is following the lead of other conservative Republicans, says Joe Gandelman at The Moderate Voice, "using Fox News as a way to avoid having to answer those pesky, non?public relations, non-softball questions and follow-up questions that he'd get on CBS, NBC, ABC." Much like Sarah Palin, he has "had a hard time in other interviews beyond Fox," says Ron Chusid in Liberal Values. Romney doesn't like to get into specifics on his secret plan for the economy, or why his Bain Capital record is an asset, and heaven forbid "clips of his past statements were brought up."

2. Romney learned his lesson from the primaries
Sticking with Fox is a deliberate strategy by Team Romney "to limit national media exposure this time around," says Michael Calderone at The Huffington Post. Romney did the Sunday shows and magazine profiles in 2008, and his GOP rivals "made the weekend rounds" this year, and how well did any of that work out? After the contentious primary, Romney has "benefited from learning the importance of hammering home a singular message on safe turf," says Justin Sink at The Hill.?

3. He's still shoring up his right flank
Team Romney is working hard to strengthen its bridges to the Right, and Fox News is just part of that strategy, says Calderone at The Huffington Post. Along with his two appearances on Fox News Sunday, the former Massachusetts governor recently held an off-the-record meeting with "dozens of conservative columnists, reporters, and bloggers," followed by interviews last week with two of the sites represented at the meeting, Hot Air and Townhall. One attendee at the private sit-down said Romney's message to conservatives is "we want you on our side and working with the campaign."?

4. He has no reason not to stick with Fox
Appearing on Fox News gives Romney a lot of advantages, says The Moderate Voice's Gandelman. Like other Republican candidates, he is almost guaranteed as much air time as he wants, "where the candidate can regurgitate talking points," in front of huge amounts of friendly voters. Plus, if he makes a verbal misstep, "more likely than not his interviewer would gloss over the gaffe, try to discreetly explain it away, and re-ask the question." It's smart PR, and today, unlike a decade ago, "Romney can get away with it."

5. He's getting bad advice
Can you really "run for the presidency more or less exclusively through Fox News?" says Richard K. Barry at Lippmann's Ghost. Maybe: After all, the only people who really pay attention to public affairs programs are political junkies and reporters. But "I think it is foolish to try." Not only is it risky to alienate reporters who help shape the campaign narrative, but I doubt ignoring the press "plays well with the mainstream of the country, the kind of people you need to vote for you outside your conservative base if you hope to win the presidency."

Tips on How to Use Outdoor Art Pros - Home-improvement Articles ...

Fixing the interior part of your house could be fulfilling, especially if you have spent a lot of time incorporating all your creative ideas. However, you shouldn?t neglect the fact that you also need outdoor art pros to make the external part of your house more attractive. The good thing about working in this area is that you don?t have to stress too much about it, because it only needs simple elements to make it attractive. All you need to do is come up with a concept and gather all the materials that you need. If you want, you can match the theme with the style that you used indoors. This will all depend on how you want things to come out. If you need more tips to help you out, here are some things that you can look into.

If you want to decorate your patio with outdoor art pros, it?s always helpful to make a plan.

Try to come up with something that will guide you throughout the process. This will also help you decide on things that you need to buy. As much as possible, be practical and focus on your priorities.

The first thing that you need to do is choose a focal point. It could be anything that you want - a lounge chair, flower vase, or any other d?cors that are catchy for you. If this element is colorful, make it a point to paint your surroundings with light colors, so that it can be emphasized.

You can also hang frames in your patio. Make sure that it is visible, so that those who are going to see it will appreciate the beauty that you are trying to show them. See to it that they don?t crowd the space. If you have a limited area, try to stick with one big frame. If you have enough, you can combine a few artworks together.

If you buy outdoor canvas art, make it a point to experiment with their placement. Try to look for an arrangement that will suit the space that you have. Stick with the rules, but make sure that you don?t get too obsessed with it, so that it won?t come out boring.

When decorating your home, it should be comfortable to you, or else you?ll defeat the purpose of beautifying it. As much as possible, it should be functional, so that everyone will enjoy staying in it.

Stick with a style that is close to your personality. Don?t just put things together, because it?s trendy. It?s something that should describe who you are.

Putting enough effort to buy outdoor canvas art and other decorations for your patio is a good thing, because it will make the area more conducive for gatherings and simple family time. Try to come up with a concept that will suit the place, so that you can maximize its use. If you don?t know where to begin, you can follow the tips that were mentioned above.

Potential teacher shortage developing in California's public schools

California could be facing a teacher shortage in the coming years if it doesn't find a way to attract fresh recruits to replace a wave of baby boomers set to retire soon, educational scholars say.

California's teaching population is growing increasingly old, even as fewer young people choose to enter the profession, according to the report, "The Status of the Teaching Profession 2011" by the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning at WestEd, a Sacramento-based research institute.

Between 2001 and 2010, the number of annual retirements among the state's teachers nearly doubled from about 8,700 to 15,500. And the problem is no different locally.

"We know a lot of the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire housing boom occurred in the `70s and `80s," said Peggy Kelly, dean of the College of Education and Integrative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona. "When you kind of do the math on that, you know that the staff of those schools graduated in the late `60s, `70s, and early 80s. They're up there in age."

At the same time, the number of people entering the teaching profession is dropping off.

In 2001, first- and second-year teachers made up 15 percent of the state's teaching pool, according to the report by the CFTL. By 2011, that number had fallen to 5 percent.

Perhaps even more telling is the fact that the number of students enrolling in teacher-preparation programs fell from about 77,000 in 2001 to 36,500 in 2010.

"We in teacher prep

have seen an enormous drop in enrollment," Kelly said.

Michael Drange, president of the Garvey Educators Association, said the state's constant budget problems may be discouraging young people from becoming teachers.

Each spring, school districts statewide go through a process of pink-slipping, or laying off, their teachers as a precautionary measure to ensure they can meet their budget for the next year. Because pink slips are handed out based on seniority, it is the newest teachers who are laid off first, though some are rehired before the fall if districts have the money.

"We have had a lot of layoffs here in our district," Drange said. "There are some young teachers that have been laid off several years in a row."

Drange said some of those teachers can't find work in another school district and end up leaving education altogether.

"The thing is once you get laid off, there's no other work to be found," Drange said.

The report also implicates tightening state and federal education standards for making it more difficult to enter the profession.

Whereas in the past, districts were willing to hire teachers with partial credentials, the federal No Child Left Behind Act has made that less likely, the report says.

Mike Sullivan, who has spent nearly 30 years working for school districts around the San Gabriel Valley and now works part-time as a substitute teacher, said increased regulations and red tape can be very frustrating for new teachers.

"In the old days you could get a lifetime credential and you were done," Sullivan said. "Now it's a five-year credential that has to be renewed. Not only that, you have to take so many tests."

Districts prepare

Both Kelly and Holly Jacobson, director of the CFTL, said school districts need to begin preparing for for a teacher shortage, even if tight finances prevent them from doing much hiring right now.

"One-hundred-thousand elementary kids are expected to arrive in the next five years," Jacobson said. "I think they need to be tracking their data really closely."

Kelly said Cal Poly Pomona has begun discussing partnership possibilities with local school districts, so graduating college students will be able to make a seamless transition into the workforce.

"The forward-thinking districts are beginning to prepare and that's where these partnerships come in," Kelly said. "We don't want a replay of 2001-2002. They were taking any warm body that walked in. That's not good for kids because you're training people on the fly."

Debbie Kaplan, superintendent of West Covina Unified, said her district hasn't yet experienced a shortage in teachers, but she is concerned about that possibility.

"It does scare me as an educator," Kaplan said. "The stakes are really high."

But Richard Martinez, superintendent of Pomona Unified, didn't seem to think his district would face a critical shortage of teachers any time soon.

Martinez said Pomona Unified is keeping careful track of its potential retirees, so it won't be caught off guard.

"I don't know if we're going to have that massive exodus of teachers in the near future," Martinez said.

And he said there are a large number of laid-off teachers eagerly waiting for jobs. He said when the district posts a job opening, it often gets as many as 300 applications.

Jacobson said that might be true now, but she cautioned districts against assuming those same people clamoring for teaching jobs now will still be there in a few years.

"Right now you probably have a lot of freshly laid off people," Jacobson said. "Five years from now is that pool still a viable pool of candidates?"

All Md. NCAA lacrosse final as Maryland tops Duke

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ??

? Monday's NCAA tournament final will be an all-Maryland affair.

The Maryland men's lacrosse team punched its ticket to the national title game with a 16-10 thumping of No. 3 seed Duke on Saturday evening before an announced 31,774 at Gillette Stadium.

The Terps, who advanced to the tournament final as an unseeded team for the second consecutive season, will meet No. 1 seed Loyola at 1 p.m. Monday. The Greyhounds (17-1) outlasted No. 4 seed Notre Dame, 7-5, earlier in the day.
Monday's title game will feature two teams from Maryland for the first time since 1979 when Johns Hopkins defeated the Terps, 15-9. Loyola will play for its first championship since 1990 when it lost to Syracuse, 21-9. Maryland, which won NCAA crowns in 1973 and 1975, fell to Virginia, 9-7, last year.

For the second straight year, Maryland ? which improved to 12-5 ? beat the Blue Devils in the national semifinal round. Almost a year ago, the Terps defeated Duke, 9-4, at M&T Bank Stadium.

Junior midfielder Kevin Cooper paced Maryland with one goal and four assists. Senior midfielder Drew Snider scored four times ? his third hat trick in three NCAA tournament games this spring, and senior attackman Joe Cummings added one goal and three assists.

Shooting efficiency was a huge factor in the Terps' victory. They scored four goals on five shots in the second quarter and 16 goals on just 29 shots for the contest.

?I just think we were finding each other in good spots on the field,? said Snider, who has scored 10 goals in the tournament. ?We all felt really comfortable with our offensive game plan. I thought we were very organized.?

Coach John Tillman said the players have the green light to shoot with the caveat that they have to make smart decisions and also consider whether they might be putting the defense at risk if that unit had to defend a long possession.

?If you feel like you have an opportunity, go,? Tillman said. ?We can't win if guys are worried about me yanking them or yelling at them. So I think players need to play, and we give them good guidance all week.?

The Terps, who also earned a berth in the tournament final in 1997, never trailed against the Blue Devils, who never got closer than one goal with 27.5 seconds left in the first quarter.

After Maryland scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 9-4 advantage, Duke went on a 4-1 run to trim the deficit to 10-8 with 13:34 left in the fourth period. But the Terps scored six straight goals to cement the outcome.

Duke (15-5) was led by senior midfielder Justin Turri, who posted two goals and one assist. But Wolf, who entered the game leading the team in both assists (31) and points (63), was limited to two assists by freshman defenseman Goran Murray. Wolf had not scored a goal against Maryland in the teams' previous two meetings this season.

Blue Devils coach John Danowski said he sensed a wave of confidence from the Terps bench that his team couldn't match.

?I thought they were much more confident than we were,? he said. ?I thought that it was very different, and we know that. Maryland kids are tough and rugged young men and very confident. And I thought our guys backed down a little bit at times and were not as confident as they've been. But again, [that's] perhaps due to how well Maryland was playing.?

    Google?s Penguin Update Goes Mainstream

    The Penguin

    The Penguin

I love The Penguin, the super villain and one of Batman?s greatest enemy, known for his trademark high tech umbrella tricks and under ground black hat dealings. Well it seems that Google has now taken a similar role on being The Penguin, with the recent Google Penguin update to tackle black-hat webspam.

And?I don?t love The Penguin anymore:) and it?s not just me.

SEO experts and webmasters have been slapped hard by the recent Google Penguin update, the damage on search rankings seems worse than the Google Panda series of changes that happened all of last year.

Google?s clamp down on webspam and black hat link building methods have had the SEO industry in a tizzy. If you?ve seen a drastic drop in traffic and sales blame it on the Penguin update.

The Wall Street Journal covered a feature story ? As Google Tweaks Searches, Some Get Lost in the Web .

It features online businesses that have been slapped by the Penguin update, one online pet store owner saw his sales drop from $68,000 a month to $25,000 a month after the change.

Another online business owner reported a drop of 30% in his overall traffic from Google. While these are just a few cases, I am sure you?ll read a lot more in the coming days as the impact of the update is felt.

Did you see a drop in traffic for your websites? Have your online sales been impacted by the Penguin update?

Atomic structure of human Argonaute-2 protein bound to a microRNA 'guide' could lead to better understanding of RNA interference mechanisms

Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. In a study published in the journal Cell on May 24, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) scientists describe the three-dimensional atomic structure of a human protein bound to a piece of RNA that "guides" the protein's ability to silence genes. The protein, Argonaute-2, is a key player in RNA interference (RNAi), a powerful cellular phenomenon that has important roles in diverse biological processes, including an organism's development.

"Detailed knowledge of the structure of human Argonaute-2 and the way it interacts with its RNA guides will greatly improve our understanding of its biological mechanism of action," says CSHL Professor and HHMI Investigator Leemor Joshua-Tor, Ph.D., the study's leader. "Such precise structural information of the human Argonaute bound to an important RNA guide could potentially aid both basic research to understand the function of genes and also advance the development of RNAi as a therapeutic strategy in clinical settings."

Upon the activation of a gene within a cell, the gene's DNA is copied into a messenger RNA (mRNA) "transcript." The instructions encoded within this transcript are then used as a blueprint by the cell's protein synthesis machinery to generate a working protein. The gene is "silenced" or prevented from giving rise to the protein, however, when an Argonaute-2 protein that is bound to a small piece of "guide" RNAeither a short-interfering RNA or a microRNAintercepts the mRNA molecule. The guide RNA, whose nucleotide sequence matches that of the target mRNA, acts as a homing device that helps the Argonaute-2 protein zero in on the mRNA target.

A few years ago, Joshua-Tor collaborated with CSHL Professor and HHMI Investigator Gregory Hannon, Ph.D., who is also a co-author in this study, to show that Argonaute proteins, which are made up of different domains or parts, act like a pair of molecular scissors that slice up target mRNAs, thus preventing proteins from being made and enforcing the silencing of their genes. The discovery of the Argonautes' "slicer" activity stemmed in part from solving the crystal structure of an Argonaute protein from Pyrococcus furiosus, an archebacterium that thrives in extremely high temperatures.

"But we still know nothing about the biological functions or mechanisms of action of archebacterial Argonautes," says Joshua-Tor. "We therefore next focused on solving the structures of Argonautes from higher organisms such as mammals, in which Argonaute functions and target recognition are well documented."

Joshua-Tor's team and other research groups subsequently determined the atomic structures of individual parts of Argonaute proteins from higher organisms. While these studies revealed several important detailsfor example, the interaction between two parts of the Argonaute protein, called the PAZ and Mid domains, with the two ends of guide RNAsJoshua-Tor's goal was to solve the structure of the entire human Argonaute protein in complex with a single human guide RNA.

Overcoming a complicated series of technical challenges, her team has achieved this goal by analyzing the structure of a full-length human Argonaute-2 protein bound to a small RNA called miR-20a, which is known to play a role in cancer development. Although Argonautes from higher organisms diverged from their archebacterial cousins more than three billion years ago, the team's analysis shows remarkable similarity between the two structures, especially in the regions that are important for target recognition and slicing activity.

"Our structure shows that the guide RNA, which is anchored at both ends by the PAZ and Mid domains, kinks and twists its way through the structure of the entire protein, making several points of contact within each domain and with the linker loops that join them," explains Joshua-Tor. "The guide RNA thus acts like a backbone that rigidly locks together the otherwise flexible Argonaute protein and gives it stability."

The researchers speculate that the path threaded through the Argonaute by the guide RNAs could have evolved to maximize mutual stability, in turn making the protein-RNA complexes long-lived. This long life is critical for many biological processes that are mediated by Argonautes. "This is also the kind of information that might help us to design better synthetic guide RNAs for therapeutic use," explains Joshua-Tor. "It will also be useful to researchers who are trying to find more precise ways of blocking Argonaute activity."
