Business Development and Marketing Strategic Planning

It?s time we admitted something.

Business development is not complicated.

Hard work? Indeed?because it is, at its core, about succeeding at relationships?and we all know ? whether we will admit it or not ? almost anything having to do with relationships is hard work.

But our quest for formulas, fast-fixes and the ultimate planning template notwithstanding, biz dev success does not reside in?some silver-bullet or?one-size-fits-all solution.

Nor does professional service sales?require the CV of a rocket scientist.

Strategically sound plans and solid processes are critical tools, to be sure; both increase efficiencies and facilitate success.

But the foundation of effective business development relationships is precisely the same as it is in a more personal context ? a relentless focus on your target.

Getting BacK To Basics

Business development in the professional services arena is a simple process:

1. Identify a Target

2. Identify what your Target cares about

3. Think about and work on the relationship (speaking to?what your target cares about)?every day

Not a complicated process. Yet, we struggle mightily, and often seem to exercise creative genius when it comes to finding ways to complicate, over-think and sabotage our efforts.

Here are a few thoughts on how to?keep it simple, and on track.

Step one ? Targeting ? is often problematic. It means letting go of the ever popular all-things-to-all-prospects strategy. Targeting suggests a proactive pursuit based on a?specific benefit or solution that meets identified needs. In an ever-changing market with new opportunities each day, it is much easier to wait for the market to come to you, and react.?And then wonder why your plan isn?t producing results.

Targeting implies a potential relationship. Or, to put it in terms of hard work ??learning what a prospect might care about; what precipitates sleepless nights. And then speaking to that issue.

That?s the hard work. If you?re still with me, this is where the good news comes in. Building a business development?plan is about one thing ? connecting the dots between what your target cares about and what you can do to help. That?s it.

Spin it, complicate it and if-and-or-but it all you want; relationships that endure ? professional or personal ? are about listening, learning, and meeting needs. Do this, and trust develops. And the relationship grows stronger.

There is no cookie-cutter for frequency of commuication or type of contact; but suffice to say that when one is focused on and committed to the development and nurture of relationship, regular contact is part of the plan.

Are there skill sets, tools and more sophisticated processes that will help? No doubt. Listening skills are at the top of the list.

But anyone serious about business development can realize aspirations with attention to this simple process. Those who find a way to personalize?it, and?incorporate it as a daily routine are the ones that make it rain.

US Census Bureau posts its first API, allows smartphone apps for the statobsessed

As much as the US Census Bureau has worked to embrace the digital space, its sea of data has been largely locked away from developers not keen on doing much of the heavy lifting. As of late last week, however, there's now a public app programming interface (API) for quickly putting all of that knowledge to work. Both mobile and web apps can hook into either the complete 2010 census or the 2006-2010 American Community Survey, bringing in basic demographics as well as more complicated subjects such as commuting habits and education. The Bureau sees the API leading to not just a more informed public, but to smarter government as well -- imagine a state government that knows the income levels by county through a custom smartphone app. Budding statistics hounds can request a key for API use right away, but if you'd rather just see what public access will mean in practice, you can check out an app gallery at the second source link below.

DEVIN TOWNSEND Terria music review by voliveira

5 stars9.5/10

And another masterpiece is revealed to me ...

Well, before you start this review I must say, this album did not surprise me as much as Ocean Machine, like so right away. But four more taps and I really started to love him (though he is my rating to 0.5 point lower than I gave her debut).

Oh God, what a masterpiece. That's all Devin could do, and more. If I remember correctly Terria he composed in honor of Canada, his hometown, and I say: it was a great honor. The album seems to move between the beautiful and monstrous, spiritual and carnal. And everywhere is Devy. This guy is a genius of more high quality, and if one day I can accept insane growls and screams in music, is because of him.

Not only is he a great composer, but also not afraid to defy convention. Ironically many have a certain discord by Olives opening track, but I do not see how bizarre that others see. This is the only song on the album where recordings of voices and other strange effects add something to it, and not to take down (as the final minutes of Mountain and The Fluke, for example). In my opinion Devy deserves applause for getting the album that way.

But do not stop there. Although the next track, Mountain, is my least favorite of this work, things get better especially with the fantastic Earth Day - that's music! If she was acceptable to me at first listen, the following showed it a masterpiece! Deep Peace maintains the standard of quality, if not the amounts, being the first song I listened to this guy. And Canada is a veritable ode to the country, keeping the usual style of the album. She is pursued by the brief but powerful Down and Under.

The Fluke is an energetic rocker, but his last two minutes (a mere unnecessary sound effects) sounds like a problem. Nobody's Here (Pink Floyd?) Is a beautiful ballad, while Tiny Tears is another great epic, though not up to the other. Finally Universal, which resembles Things Beyond Things debut album.

A masterpiece? Without a doubt. Devy is a genius, and if the rest of his work remains in this quality standard will not have to complain about.

Thread: What disaster economics means for investors - Gold is Money

What disaster economics means for investors

A recent FT article about 'Disaster Economics' by Gillian Tett caught our attention. We've been fans of Ms Tett's work for a while, especially her excellent book 'Fool's Gold'. This article was about the bond markets, but it was some interesting financial history and commentary that caught our attention.

Amidst a discussion of bizarre behaviour in the bond markets, we hear again of recent analysis from Fulcrum Asset Management. Fulcrum have been arguing a generational shift in the perception of, and planning for, disasters amongst investors. As one generational cohort of money managers yields control of the world's portfolios, a new one is emerging that perceives disasters as more frequently occurring than their predecessors.
Tectonic shifts in investment portfolios

Fulcrum point to a contemporary, but possibly previous, tendency (last few decades) of investors to act against a backdrop of disasters and crises as irregular and infrequent. This contemporary investor behaviour is contextualised with reference to the work of the economist Professor Robert Barro. Mr Barro's work finds that although there have been 58 'disasters', a drop in GDP of >10%, in the 20th century, only two occurred post 1950. During this time portfolios positioned for the good times, heavily allocated towards yield and productive investments, have reaped a fine harvest.

But today is different, continue Fulcrum, and investors are changing their perceptions and ultimately their asset allocation. We would urge this phenomenon has a role to play in a 12 year gold and silver bull market.

Investments can indeed be split into two categories; ones that produce returns and ones that offer protection. Or in another way, investors are either worried about the return on their investments, or the return of their investments. Different financial eras reward different investment biases, and investors act accordingly, allocating capital more heavily in one direction or another.
Coming home to roost

This is something we have talked about in these pages before. Our world view, including a perception of an overly leveraged banking system and politically mismanaged national currencies, means we are in favour of safe haven assets, especially those that lack counterparty risk.

Ms Tett finds some weight in the arguments of Fulcrum and draws a number of potential implications. One of these implications being that the need for safe havens may not be a short term phenomenon; we could not agree more. The number of safe haven bonds decreases by the day, and we see flows out of poor quality sovereigns towards Germany and the USA as short term examples of bounded rationality. If you're stuck in the glue factory seeking a stead, you would naturally choose the best looking horse available; a German horse is currently better than a Spanish horse. Ultimately though these German and American financial steads are too debt burdened to stay in the race.

As safe haven bond issuers are whittled down in numbers, non-financial assets such as gold bullion investment will continue to hold appeal. This is one of the reasons we feel there is plenty more juice left in this precious metals bull market. What constitutes a balanced, diversified or efficient portfolio, is indeed subjective, but any thinking investor needs to factor in disaster. Investors need to at least consider the thesis that the 1950 to 2000 period contained some anomalies.
Rethinking investment theory

Another implication that Ms Tett draws out of Fulcrum's thesis is that investment theory needs to be rethought in order to place less historical emphasis on the 'learnings' of the contemporary financial era.

Financial economics has assumed stability and regularity that a longer term appreciation of financial history suggests is misplaced. It is not just Robert Barro's work that suggests this, but other economists who worked with sample periods over 50 years, and other schools of economic and mathematical thought. Try telling proponents of complexity theory that markets are understandable and stable. Jim Rickards provides an excellent articulation of the limitations of financial economics in his best-selling book 'Currency Wars'.

It is interesting to think how such changing perceptions to disaster would affect asset classes and, indeed, investment strategies. Warren Buffet is perhaps the preeminent investor of the 20th Century, but he is at heart a security analyst (with admittedly a fair macro appreciation). How would Mr Buffet's modus operandi reward investors between 2000 and 2030, given his focus on equities and productive investments?

The financial world fell in love with equities in the 1980s and 1990s, with academics such as Professor Jeremy Siegel, and their books like 'Stocks for the long run', being the choir masters. Sample periods have a great deal to play in research and the stocks for the long run mantra may be exposed as excessive dogma, something that some gold investors can also sometimes be guilty of.
The Jim Rogers way and gold investing

We seem to be part-time cheerleaders for Jim Rogers in these pages, but his investing of the last 40+ years has had a broader approach, with wider asset allocation, than the Oracle of Omaha. Most notably is Mr Rogers' more concerned focus on disaster, and less dogmatic love in with equities.

Mr Rogers was a big proponent of real assets in the 1970s, including commodities and precious metals. His performance over that period was stellar, and Mr Rogers has been calling for gold and silver since the turn of the Millennium as well.

If disaster economics is really here to stay, and investor perceptions are melded around this, strategies that pay adequate homage to this may better reward investors. Disaster economics means a more focused and long term attention on safe havens. Some of these safe havens are relatively less able to absorb these potential investment flows; gold and silver especially. Some might ask if the gold investment market is part of such apparent safe haven investing; you bet it is.

1400 Miles in 18 Weeks | TCH Travel

?The past 5 weeks have been wonderful, yet very difficult. I have not been able to post on my blog due to a lack of access to a computer, but there are lots of pictures posted on my Facebook page. The AT is so much more than I ever thought it would be. I am much stronger than I thought I was and miss my home and family more than I expected.

Since my last post I shared a week?of hiking on the trail with my friend Jenny. It was a real treat to actually hike with someone for a change. It made the hard parts a bit easier and the beautiful scenes so much nicer because they were shared. I also?had a wonderful anniversary visit with my husband;?we went to the Gettysburg National Battlefield Park?and Washington, DC for a couple of days. I?was even?able to share some trail magic when I got back on the trail on July 5th, in Mt Holly Springs, PA. The rocks on the trail? in Pennsylvania were over-abundant and painful.

When I arrived in Duncannon, PA it was 104 degrees and my?brain was fried. It took over

Duncannon, Pennsylvania near where the Appalac...

an hour at the Doyle (one beer and one big glass of ice-cold water) before I could even think about getting something to eat. I was rewarded with a fantastic veggie burger and fries and then the Bash at Billville?by the river was a great way to end the day and hang out with some other hikers and past thru-hikers. Thanks Trailangel Mary and all the rest!

Climbing over many rocks and boulders in PA?was tricky and earned me more than one bruise, but I did it and made it through the state. Water was very scarce and I was surprised not to find more water magic on the trail near roadways.

The Church of the Mountain Hostel in Delaware Water Gap was a great respite for us weary thru-hikers and Guitarman?was there to provide magic rides all over the town and beyond. The hostel at ST. Thomas Episcopal church in Vernon, NJ was a real treat and I was picked up by a limo driver and taken back to the trail on my way out-of-town.

I had to get off the trail in NJ to get to the VA for some medical treatment, but was able to make up the time off before getting off in NY due to severe weather. After getting back on in Greenwood Lake and hiking two days I was again forced off due to torrential rains. I found my way to a road and waved down a car. The driver didn?t see me, but one of the passengers did and they came back and picked me up. I was soaked to the skin and my clothes were dripping, but my fellow hikers (not thru-hikers) gave me a ride in to Mahwah, NJ and I am again trying to dry out and hope to find a ride back to the trail tomorrow weather permitting. Finding a hotel in the pouring rain in strange territory was not easy and I?ve ended up about 15 miles from the trail and not an easy place to hitch from. Cross your fingers that I will be able to get a ride that won?t break the bank.

I have nine weeks left to cover just a bit over 784 miles to get to Mt. Katahdin, ME and I know there is more tricky terrain to cover that will require my strength and courage.?Completing the Appalachian Trail as a thru-hiker is not for the faint of heart or for sissies.

I can?t tell you how much I am looking forward to getting home to my husband and cats; and seeing my new grandson for the first time. This adventure has been way more than I ever expected and I wouldn?t have it any other way. Hiking the AT is a 25-year dream that requires a big commitment. One must really know why they are doing it, otherwise it?could be?given up along the way.

If you have not yet made a donation to the Denver Fisher House, please do so now. I can?t tell you how great it feels when I get an e-mail telling me?that a donation has been made. Thanks so much for your generosity and care for our military families.

Google's Death Valley drive with the click of a mouse

Imagine being the only driver on a two-lane asphalt highway as the stark desolation of Death Valley National park passes on each side and the crystal blue sky stretches up from the horizon.

Or picture a tight left turn on Yosemite's Glacier Point Road where in the east iconic Half Dome suddenly appears against a backdrop of the snow-capped High Sierra.

The Google Street View service that has brought us Earth as we might not be able to afford to see it ? as well criticism that some scenes along its 5 million miles of the globe's roadways invade privacy ? this month has turned its 360-degree cameras on road trips through five national parks in California.

"Everyone likes to take a road trip through a national park," said Evan Rapoport, the Street View project manager, who was inspired by a cross-country camping trip he took after graduation. "Bringing unique places to people that they might not go in the real world is unique to Street View."

The company sought permission from the Department of the Interior before filming in May as drivers hit the road in vehicles rigged with 15-lens cameras that point in all directions, Rapoport said. The camera fires off still images at intervals depending upon the speed of the vehicle, then custom software blurs faces and stitches all of them together into an ever-advancing 360-degree panorama.

Click right and see orange-hued boulders formed from cooling magma. Click up and squint into that fireball of a sun hovering over the southeast California desert in Joshua Tree National Park, which is featured with the others along with the forest-dense Sequoia & Kings Canyon and Redwood National Park at Crescent City near the Oregon border.

Stop in the middle of the virtual road and do a 360 without worrying about being rear-ended by a ubiquitous RV.

The project was part of a Street View "refresh" of California that involved a trip down Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast, including the famous Bixby Creek Bridge that spans the mouth of a coast-hugging canyon.

Is it part of a master plan to capture people in a virtual world?

"I sure hope not," Raporport said. "Part of our goal is to inspire people to see these places in person."

As national park attendance continues to decline, officials welcome this unique virtual visit as a way to keep fans connected and inspire others to experience the sights in person.

"I often wish we could get the word out on some of the park system's lesser known wonders," said Candace Tinkler, chief interpreter at Redwoods, with its massive trees that can live 2,000 years and soar up to 350 feet. "This is a wonderful opportunity for people around the world to connect to these places."

The parks join other Street View features like a snowy glide down one of the ski runs at Squaw Valley of 1960 Olympics fame, or a walk around the gardens of the Louvre museum in Paris. Rapoport would not say whether other U.S. national parks are being considered for this special look."

Joe Zarki at Joshua Tree says the virtual drive could be used to show tourists at the 1,200-square-mile park's peripherally located visitors' centers that the flat expanse of desert changes to a landscape of boulders and the namesake towering yuccas within an hour's drive.

With summer temperatures hovering near 120 degrees and heat stroke warnings common, this time of year only the hearty visit Death Valley, which at 282 below sea level boasts the lowest locale in the U.S.

"We're often the forgotten big park," said spokeswoman Cheryl Chipman of the 3,000-square-mile park that is the largest in the lower 48. "I think it will make people want to come to the park. It's a cool place, but it is remote. When they see those photos and the crystal clear blue skies they're going to want to come here ? especially in the middle of the winter."

Rousey, Kaufman, Carano ? The World According to Munah

In case you were wondering, female mixed martial arts is still very much alive and kicking.? The latest installment of the Invicta Fighting Championships is this Saturday night, and in August, Strikeforce returns to Showtime with a main event that will feature champ Ronda Rousey attempting to remove challenger Sarah Kaufman's arm in the most painful, non-surgical way possible.? Yep.? Wimmins.? They be fightin'.? So in the spirit of all this impending violence perpetrated by the fairer sex, Cagewriter tracked down 125-pound female fighter Munah Holland, who knocked out Strikeforce veteran Carina Damm two weeks ago at Matrix Fights (a regional show in Philadelphia) to get her perspective on things.? She is, after all, on the front lines.

Things to know about Holland: she's a product of the Tiger Schulmann MMA system, and manages one of the organization's gyms in New Jersey.? In 2004, she won the prestigious Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament, transitioned to professional fighting with Chuck Norris' ill-fated kickboxing promotion the World Combat League, and now fights in the cage, shimmying out of the clutches of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts and feeding them knuckles until they fall.? ?In her MMA debut, Holland brutalized Kim Couture for three rounds; more recently, she's KO'd top New England fighter Marianna Kheyfets in Bellator and put away Damm.?

That's Holland.? Here's what she had to say about some of her fellow fighters:

On Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey - "Ronda is, I would say, this deliciously deadly, amazing person.? She has something that, when I watch her fight, is incredibly contained, and at the same time, explosive.? It's really fun to watch, and her ground game is sick.? She is definitely a force to be reckoned with, no matter her opponent in front of her.? I can't wait for the upcoming fight between her and Sarah Kaufman ? I think that's going to be a great fight."

On top Strikeforce bantamweight challenger and former champ Sarah Kaufman - "I've watched Sarah for a long time, because as a female martial artist, she was one of the girls I knew about first.? She's got really, really powerful hands ? like, lead in her hands.? She's very dangerous.? She's constantly evolving? got a lot of heart, and like Ronda, she's a force to be reckoned with.? And Sarah has some very good wrestling, so it's going to be interesting, because if Sarah can maintain her wrestling defense and use her hands and use her range, it could be a really interesting fight.? If it stays standing, Sarah can do some damage with her hands.? We haven't really seen Ronda's chin, we don't know how much damage it can take."? Her prediction for the August 18 Strikeforce title fight?? "If it stays standing, Sarah's going to have the advantage.? If it goes to the ground, my gut says Ronda."

On former Strikeforce bantamweight champ Miesha Tate - "I love Miesha.? I once said this out loud and people heard me, but if you have a bum that looks like Miesha's, you've got to plaster it everywhere.? She's beautiful, she's tough as nails.? And that fight with Ronda, that was sick."

On former Strikeforce featherweight champ Gina Carano - "Gina, I think, has done a world of good for female fighting in general.? She's chosen her own path, and gone the way she feels where her future lies.? You have to do whatever it is you have to do in this world to have a life and a good living, but I thank her for exposing female martial artists to the world, and making it important for people to watch and making it exciting for people to watch, and proving that, regardless of whether it's females or males, it's just a great sport to watch.? She proved that the numbers can be there, that the seats can be filled for female mixed martial artists just as they can for men."

On former Strikeforce featherweight champ Cris "Cyborg" Santos ? "Cyborg would scare most grown men away in the cage.? The first time I saw Cris Cyborg, I was like, 'Uh, this woman is just frightening.'? And frightening in a good way.? What a beast.? What a beast of mass proportions.? This girl? frightening strength, amazing ability coming from Chute Boxe, can really take so much.? She's just like a pitbull.? She's just going to keep on coming and keep on coming."

On female MMA pioneer Tara LaRosa - "Long before Gina or Cyborg came into the picture, you'd hear about Tara just making her way through one person after another in the circuit ? especially in New Jersey, where she's got a lot of fans.? For me, she was definitely an inspiration.? We can do it, we can do it really well and with a lot of class."

On hoping to fight in the UFC one day - "Oh yeah.? Some little girls want to grow up and wear pink slippers, but for me, the thought of being in the UFC?? I hope it gets to that point for women, I hope it gets to that point in my MMA lifetime.? We can only hope for that.? Who wouldn't want to be in that arena?"

On Dana White reconsidering his stance on not allowing women in the UFC's Octagon - "I don't know any woman who wouldn't want to see women in the UFC, and I hope Dana White considers that at some point.? Because we'll bring the crowds, we'll fill the seats, and people really enjoy watching it."

?

Jim Genia tweets here and wrote this book.? So what?

A look at recent airline industry earnings

The biggest U.S. airlines all reported earnings over the past two weeks. Here is a summary of the earnings and what they reveal about the state of the airline industry.

? July 18: AMR Corp., the parent of American Airlines, lost $241 million in the three months ended in June as it paid out big bucks to restructure under bankruptcy protection. But strip out those costs and American had its best results for a second quarter in 5 years. American and other airlines have been raising fares and charging fees for everything from bags to extra legroom. American is also cutting flights or flying smaller planes on routes with low passenger traffic. Excluding bankruptcy and other costs, AMR had a profit of $95 million. Revenue set a record at $6.46 billion.

? July 19: Southwest Airlines Co. said net income soared 42 percent as its revenue also set a record. Southwest's average one-way fare topped $150, up 5 percent from last summer. Plenty of passengers were willing to pay the higher prices as the peak vacation season began ? traffic measured in miles traveled also rose 5 percent. Oil prices dropped, so Southwest's jet fuel costs fell slightly to $3.22 per gallon. Fuel has become the biggest expense for airlines over the past few years, eclipsing labor costs.

? July 25: A wrong-way bet on fuel prices was the main reason Delta Air Lines had a loss in the second quarter. Like other airlines, Delta uses financial devices known as hedges to protect against a spike in oil prices. When oil dropped sharply instead during the second quarter, those hedges cost Delta $561 million. That offset a solid operating performance. Revenue rose 6 percent to $9.73 billion, and excluding special items Delta's profit topped Wall Street expectations.

? July 25: US Airways hit the airline jackpot in the second quarter ? higher fares plus lower fuel prices. Its net income tripled to $306 million. The bigger profit wasn't because US Airways carried a lot more passengers ? traffic rose just a half-percent. But passengers paid 7.4 percent more to fly compared to the same period a year ago. That operating performance may be overshadowed by US Airways' public campaign for a merger with American Airlines.

July 26: United Continental Holdings is a product of last decade's industry consolidation. Merging the operations of United Airlines and Continental isn't complete yet, and it hasn't been easy. United's second-quarter profit fell 37 percent because of merger costs. United's revenue per passenger trailed that of Delta, American and US Airways. Analysts expect the merger to pay off in the long run, but for now they're concerned about the stumbles.

Ghana?s ex-leader Jerry Rawlings has said late president John Atta Mills was suffering from cancer and could only work for a few hours per day before his death earlier this week.

In comments to the BBC?s Focus on Africa programme while attending an event in Congo, Rawlings said Mills? death on Tuesday ?was not unexpected? and suggested the late president may have lived longer had he focused on treatment.

He said Mills had been battling cancer for ?quite a while.?

The interview has drawn attention back home in Ghana, both from those who say Rawlings, who maintains wide influence in the West African nation, was disrespectful and others who argue he was simply being truthful.

No official cause has been given for Mills? death, though there have been unconfirmed reports in local media saying he suffered from throat cancer.

?Quite frankly, I think had he been advised and done something wiser earlier on, he could probably have survived for another six, seven months, I guess,? Rawlings said in the interview.

The two men have been rivals recently despite Mills previously serving as Rawlings? vice president. Asked about Mills? legacy, Rawlings said that ?he?s played his part.?

?As my vice president, I think he was one of the finest?,? Rawlings said.

He added later, referring to Mills? recent performance, ?considering that the cancer affected both his eye and his ear, he couldn?t sustain more than three hours per day.?

Rawlings was Ghana?s longest ruler who seized power in successive coups, in 1979 and 1981, before serving as the elected president from 1993-2001.

Ghana has recently been seen as a bastion of democracy in West Africa, and the transition so far has gone smoothly, with vice president John Dramani Mahama swiftly sworn in to replace Mills, as spelled out in the constitution.

Elections are set for December, and Mills had been set to seek re-election. Senior figures of the ruling National Democratic Congress were to meet on Thursday to decide a way forward, and it was unclear if Rawlings would attend.

Inflatable heat shield could be used to land humans on Mars, NASA says

After its successful test launch of the Inflatable Re-entry Vehicle Experiment 3, NASA says that this technology could be used to land humans on Mars.

NASA successfully tested an inflatable heat shield prototype Monday (July 23), a technology that could one day be used for future space exploration missions, including landing humans on Mars, its builders say.

The Inflatable Re-entry Vehicle Experiment 3, or IRVE-3, was conducted at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va. During the test flight, a small capsule was launched atop a suborbital rocket, and an inflatable heat shield was deployed in space before it plummeted back through Earth's atmosphere at hypersonic speeds to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean.

The demonstration flight helps pave the way for new re-entry systems on future spacecraft, said Neil Cheatwood, IRVE-3 principal investigator at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.

"As far as the applicability of the technology, [we were] originally motivated to do this to allow us to potentially land more masses at Mars," Cheatwood said in a press briefing after Monday's successful test flight. "Mars is a very challenging destination. It has a very thin atmosphere ? too much of an atmosphere to ignore, but not enough for us to do the things we would at other planets. That was our motivation about nine years ago when we started doing this stuff."??[Photos: NASA's Inflatable Heat Shield for Spaceships]

Since the inflatable heat shield is designed to withstand hypersonic speeds and extreme temperatures, the IRVE-3 technology could give mission managers more options for where to land future spacecraft or rovers on Mar, such as touching down at higher latitudes on the Red Planet.

"We want to go to higher latitudes at that mass, or use this technology for larger payloads, such as humans," Cheatwood explained.

The heat shield technology could also be used to tackle the issue of "garbage" on the International Space Station, Cheatwood said. Robotic spacecraft that are sent to deliver fresh supplies, food and experiments to the orbiting outpost could then be re-packed with unwanted materials to return to Earth.

"When we send up re-supply [spacecraft] to the station, there's no portable on-demand storage up there," Cheatwood said. "When they bring up 'x' number of cubic feet of stuff, we need to get rid of that much as well."

ABERDEEN, Md. (AP) ? Cal Ripken Jr.'s 74-year-old mother was found with her hands bound and blindfolded in the back seat of her car Wednesday after being kidnapped at gunpoint at her home outside Baltimore a day earlier, police and friends said.

Investigators do not know the kidnapper's motive and there was no ransom demand for Vi Ripken's release, Aberdeen Police Chief Henry Trabert said at a news conference.

The gunman forced Ripken into her silver Lincoln Continental between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday, police said. She was found unharmed but shaken about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday near her home in Aberdeen, about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore, where her son's Ripken Baseball complex is located.

When asked if police believe the kidnapper knew who he was abducting, Trabert did not answer, saying police don't know the motive or if the suspect any ties to the Ripken family.

"This case is still brand new," Trabert said.

Next-door neighbor Gus Kowalewski said he spoke with Vi Ripken later Wednesday morning. The 72-year-old retired autoworker said Ripken told him the gunman tied her hands and put a blindfold on her, but said he wouldn't hurt her.

"He lit cigarettes for her, they stopped for food," Kowalewski said. "He said, 'I'm not going to hurt you. I'm going to take you back,' and that's what he did."

Kowalewski said Ripken told him the gunman originally planned to put tape over her eyes.

"But he didn't do that because she said 'please don't do that 'cause I'm claustrophobic,'" he said.

Instead, the gunman put some type of mask or blinders on her, and she could see somewhat out the sides, he said.

Investigators determined that Ripken was missing Tuesday night after talking to another police department.

Bush tax cuts: What you'd pay under rival plans | Top iPad Finance ...

Tax plans from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell epitomize the diviide between Democrats and Republicans when it comes to taxes in 2013.

Tax plans from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell epitomize the diviide between Democrats and Republicans when it comes to taxes in 2013.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ? Congress starts voting this week over competing proposals for how to extend the Bush tax cuts.

None of them is likely to be enacted as is ? nor is the debate likely to be resolved before the November elections at the earliest.

But the proposals frame the terms of a fight that will be waging for months.

And at stake are the tax bills of millions of Americans.

Competing proposals: Senate Democrats have proposed to extend all the Bush tax cuts for one year on income up to $ 200,000 for individuals ($ 250,000 for married couples).

Democrats would also extend the 2009 expansion of a few tax credits for low-income and middle-income Americans, including the earned income tax credit, the child tax credit and the American Opportunity tax credit.

High-income households would see their top two income tax rates increase to 36% and 39.6%, from 33% and 35% today. Their ability to benefit from certain tax breaks would be limited. And their tax rates on capital gains and dividends would increase to 20% from 15% now.

Democrats dropped a provision that would have re-set estate tax parameters at 2009 levels, under which one could exempt up to $ 3.5 million of an estate and face a top rate of 45% on the taxable portion. Otherwise, the exemption level is set to fall to $ 1 million next year and the top rate would rise to 55%.

Senate Republicans, meanwhile, have proposed a full one-year extension of the Bush tax cuts, including the lower rates on investment income. They do not, however, continue the 2009 expansion of the low- and middle-income tax breaks included in the Democratic plan.

Republicans would extend the current estate tax, which allows for a $ 5 million exemption level and imposes a top rate of 35%.

Both parties would offer protection for the middle class from the Alternative Minimum Tax, although the Democrats? plan only does so for 2012, while Republicans would provide it for both 2012 and 2013.

Bottom line under GOP plan: Under the Republican proposal, 15.4% of households would see tax increases, but the increases would primarily hit people making under $ 80,000, according to a new analysis from the independent Tax Policy Center.

Drilling down, 20% of households making less than $ 48,000 would see average tax increases as high as $ 958.

Another 14% in the middle of the income scale (roughly between $ 48,000 and $ 80,000) would pay an average of $ 783 more than they do today.

At the very high end of the income scale ? at least $ 600,000 ? less than 0.05% would see a tax increase.

Bottom line under Democratic plan: The breakdown gets more complicated for the Democrats? proposal because it doesn?t include protection from the AMT for 2013, even though the going assumption is that Democrats would eventually back such a patch.

The AMT is supposed to hit wealthy filers, but without a patch it would hit tens of millions of non-wealthy households. That?s why Congress regularly passes one on a bipartisan basis.

How much of a difference does the patch make? Without it, 23% of households would see a tax hike under the Democrats? plan, with the majority of those increases hitting folks making more than $ 80,000 ? at an average of $ 5,323.

But with an AMT patch, only 1.4% of households would see their taxes go up.

For example, no one making less than $ 133,000 would see a tax increase, according to the Tax Policy Center analysis. And only 9.4% of those in the top quintile of households would pay more.

Within the high-income groups, only half a percent of those making between $ 180,000 and $ 252,000 would have a bigger tax bill, owing an average of $ 25,286 more.

Roughly a fifth of those making between $ 252,000 and $ 600,000 would owe more, paying an additional $ 5,358 on average.

And the vast majority of people making more than $ 600,000 would have higher taxes, and they would pay $ 62,608 more on average.?To top of page

Mahama: writer, historian and Ghana's new president

Ghana's John Dramani Mahama, sworn in as president on Tuesday following the sudden death of John Atta Mills, says he was forever changed by his boyhood experiences during a 1966 military coup.

The 53-year-old who had been vice president was born in Bole Bamboi in northern Ghana and holds degrees in history and communications, according to Ghanian media.

He served as a diplomat in Japan in the early 1990s before returning to Ghana, where he was first elected to parliament as a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party.

He later became the chairman of the West Africa Caucus at the Pan African Parliament in Pretoria, before deceased president Mills tipped him for the vice presidency.

Mills died on Tuesday at a hospital in Accra following an unspecified illness.

Mahama, according to a recently published memoir, grew up as a child of privilege.

In the book, "My First Coup d'Etat -- And Other True Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa," he describes his experiences at an elite boarding school in the capital Accra, where he was drilled in the customs of Ghana's former colonial power, Britain.

"The history and prestige (of the Achimota boarding school) did not stop me from hating it," he wrote.

In the book's first chapter, he vividly recalls the day in 1966 when he learned Ghana's founding president Kwame Nkrumah was ousted in a military coup.

"When I look back on my life it's clear to me that this moment marked the awakening of my consciousness. It changed my life and influenced all the moments that followed," he wrote.

His father, who served as junior minister in Nkrumah's government, was briefly detained and interrogated by the coup leaders.

Mahama described his journey around Accra, accompanied by an official from his school, in search of his father, who was later released unharmed.

"I felt, as children often do, that my family and I were somehow shielded, automatically exempt from anything tragic," he wrote in the book.

He recently told the US National Public Radio that his childhood was heavily influenced by American cultural icons, including James Brown and the Jackson Five.

He served as the west African nation's communication minister from 1998 to 2001 and as the spokesman for the NDC between 2001 and 2004, when the party was in opposition, according to local media.

He takes over a nation of some 25 million people, lauded for boasting some of the strongest democracy credentials in Africa, which has recently become a significant oil producer.

Brunner outspending GOP Senate rivals in Missouri

by Associated Press

KMOV.com

Posted on July 16, 2012 at 1:11 PM

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo?Businessman John Brunner has repeatedly dipped into his personal wealth to easily outspend his Republican rivals in a Missouri primary to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Federal campaign finance figures reviewed Monday show Brunner?s campaign spent nearly $2.8 million this past quarter, much of which went to TV ads and almost all of which came from Brunner?s own pocketbook. By comparison, the Senate campaigns of U.S. Rep. Todd Akin and former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman each spent nearly $279,000 during the past three months.

All three are competing in the Aug. 7 Republican primary for the right to challenge McCaskill in the November election. Missouri?s Senate race is one of the top targets nationally as Republicans seek to take control of the Senate away from Democrats.

McCaskill, who raised about $2.6 million this past quarter, already has spent $3 million on TV ads for the fall and reported a bank balance of about $3.6 million at the start of July.

Brunner, of the St. Louis suburb of Frontenac, made millions when he sold his majority ownership interest in his family?s business, Vi-Jon Inc., to a private equity firm in 2006. When Brunner announced his candidacy in October, he said he expected the Republican primary to cost about $5 million. While declining to say exactly how much of his own money he would spend, he vowed ?the bottom line is that we?re just not going to run out of gas.?

A summary of Brunner?s finance report shows he contributed more than $2.5 million to his campaign from April through June, bringing his total personal contribution to nearly $4.8 million. Brunner?s own money accounts for almost 90 percent of the cash he has raised for his campaign.

Earlier in the campaign, Steelman also put some of her money into her race with a $400,000 loan. But she did not add more during the past quarter.

Akin has not self-financed his campaign, but he has raised more from individual contributors than his rivals, which his campaign claimed Monday was indicative of grass-roots support.

During the past quarter, Akin raised a total of nearly $284,000, Steelman took in nearly $242,000 and Brunner received about $193,000 from others. After expenditures, Akin reported about $1.4 million in his account at the start of July. Steelman had $562,000. Brunner had less than $183,000, but that comparatively low balance may not matter if Brunner continues to put more of his own money into the race.

Brunner and Akin both are airing a new round of TV ads. Brunner?s ad questions whether Akin and Steelman are truly conservative, citing their records in office. Akin?s ad is a rebuttal that?like his first ad?features former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee defending Akin?s conservative record while in Congress.

  1. Understanding and defining the corporate mission
  2. The distinction between strategic business units
  3. Analysis of the existing business portfolio and deciding on investment strategies
  4. Choosing to enter the new business growth strategy

Clear Corporate Mission

Clear corporate mission is ?what this business is doing and accomplishing?

The following reference factors define corporate mission:

  1. History and culture
  2. The intentions and ideas of the owners and managers
  3. Development and changes of the environment
  4. Resources
  5. Core competencies and strengths

In order to write a corporate mission statement, companies must consider the following factors:

I. ?Specify areas of activity of the enterprise

1. Product range

2. The scope of the market

3. The longitudinal extent of the geographical scope

  1. Have their own business
  2. Common properties and phase requirements
  3. Acquire a certain amount of resources
  4. Its competitors

The common operating main line is an intrinsic link between the current product, market and future products. Its purpose for the enterprise is for the effective administration of the business strategy of the management team personnel. This is to distinguish between the main bases of the strategic business unit.

  1. Market-oriented vs. product-oriented
  2. Practical but has limited coverage to maintain the common main line of business
  3. The planning portfolio strategy

The Boston Consulting Group, France (Market Growth ? Market Share Matrix)

Star class:

High market growth and relatively high market share of units, due to rapid development; businesses must invest heavily to support its progress.

Taurus class:

Market growth is low with a relatively high market share. The business can provide more cash or use the support and development of other businesses.

The Problem Class:

High market growth rate with a relatively low market share. ?Companies face an uncertain future; it may be a short time to market business.

Skinny Dog Class:

Low market growth and relatively low market share. The business should no longer be involved.

The four categories of business may be subject to change. ?Based on the above data, the strategy to choose should include:

Expansion strategy ? Star Class

Maintenance strategy ? Taurus Class

Harvesting strategies ? Taurus class business prospects, but applied to Skinny Dog Class, and Problem Class

General Electric Company Law

Analytical methods are provided by the General Electric Company called ? strategic business planning grid, also referred to as ?GE?. In the assessment of businesses, the following factors should be considered:

  1. Industry attractiveness
  2. The business unit?s business strength and competitiveness

Industry attractiveness depends on the following factors:

  • The size of the market
  • Market growth
  • Margin
  • Degree of competitive
  • Periodicity
  • Seasonal

Expansion of the industry is attractive with economies of scale and units undergoing product cost reduction with its manufacturing and distribution. The learning curve of the unit product cost is possible with the growth of management experience.

A business is subject to the following factors:

  1. Relative market share
  2. Price competitiveness
  3. Product quality
  4. Degree of Customer Understanding
  5. Marketing efficiency
  6. Geographical Advantages

Planning the company?s growth strategy

The investment strategy determines which business units to develop and expand, and which to harvest, and to abandon.

New business systems thinking:

  1. Look for development opportunities in existing business within
  2. Analyze the possibility of establishing and engaging in some new target business
  3. Consider that development has nothing to do with the current business, instead look at new, strong and attractive business opportunities

Three Growth Strategies

Intensive Growth Strategy:

Existing products and existing markets with potential profit can be used. It mainly includes three forms:

  1. The market penetration strategy, through a variety of marketing initiatives aimed to attract customers, increase sales of existing products in existing markets.
  2. Advertise development strategies to the existing products into new markets
  3. Implement a development strategy in present markets by improving existing products, or by adding new products for increased sales

Integration of Growth Strategies:

Enterprise industry?s attractiveness and growth potential can be used in mainly three forms:

  1. The Backward Integration Strategy give manufacturers back the control of the supplier for the integration of supply and production, in order to achieve production combination
  2. Forward Integration Strategy gives control of the distribution system to the enterprise in order to achieve sales combination
  3. Horizontal Integration Strategy merge similar products of competitors with the enterprise

The above three forms can be implemented in the same company.

Multi-Angle Growth Strategy:
