Local animal shelter hopes to boost adult-animal adoptions

The Adair County Humane Society is hoping to find a ?forever home? for some of its older animals still awaiting adoption.

The local shelter kicked off a new senior ?Find-a-Friend Program? this summer which works to benefit both senior humans and senior animals.

The program allows seniors over the age of 55 to adopt any animal of any age for half the adoption cost. On the flip-side, the program also allows a person of any age to adopt a senior animal (over age five) to also be adopted for half of the adoption cost.

Missy Decker, director of the Humane Society, said the hope is that the older dogs and cats, which aren?t adopted as often as the puppies or kittens, will find homes.

?We try to stress how nice it is [to have an older animal] because they usually have their manners down and might even be housebroken,? she said.

She also said that it benefits seniors in the community who could provide great homes for the animals but often live on fixed or limited incomes that makes adoption harder.

Bridget Thomas, a member of the Adair County Humane Society Board of Directors, said that the decision to put on this program was made by the board as a whole because it?s a win-win for everyone involved.

?We owe it to these animals,? she said. ?The more we adopt out, the more we?re able to get in.?

During the first month of the program, Decker said there have been six adoptions, whether it be seniors adopted or seniors adopting.

Decker said that usual costs for adoption are $85 for dogs and $70 for cats that are over six months old who are spayed or neutered. For puppies and kittens there is a $40 deposit charge.

Decker said that the same ten questions that each person who?s considering adopting are asked will still be given to people who intend to adopt through this program.

This program will continue through September. For more questions, contact the Humane Society at 660-665-8038.
