Our enduring love affair with 'flying jewels'

?My parents took me to a butterfly house when I was 6. That Christmas, I asked for a greenhouse.? By the age of 8, Luke Brown had bred his first butterfly, the zebra longwing, Heliconius charithonia. Now as manager of the Sensational Butterflies exhibition at the Natural History Museum in London, it is that child?s delight he hopes to inspire.

And he succeeds. Against the backdrop of the museum?s towers, a heated marquee attracts visitors to walk around an evocation of a butterfly?s life cycle, with up to 1500 tropical and semi-tropical butterflies and moths dancing around them. Especially exciting is a glass-fronted warm room, where nascent butterflies emerge from chrysalises and gingerly unfurl their wings.

The romance of butterflies is also captured in William Leach?s book Butterfly People: An American encounter with the beauty of the world. He reminds us of the duality of these ?flying jewels?, initially desired as objects of beauty, and later representing the spirituality of nature versus emergent capitalism.

Leach voyages from 18th to the early 20th century, telling the strange stories of America?s obsessive ?butterfly people?. We meet, for example, the owner of a coal mine turned eminent lepidopterist, and a Shakespearean actor who entertained gold miners panning the Wild West, while also netting his own lepidopteral gold.

Through these characters Leach captures a passion bordering on fanaticism. But their obsessional pursuit of butterflies resonates outside their field, their stories criss-crossing that of the early US scientific establishment, the journals Science and The American Naturalist, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Fascinating, too, is the background against which these early naturalists and their butterfly stories unfold, with the frontier spirit permeating their explorations. Butterfly hunting went hand in hand with the gold rush, and the steady advance of the railroads into uncharted wilds opened up new frontiers into nature.

That was not without a big price tag, however: in just 20 years the US achieved a level of environmental exploitation that had taken centuries in Europe.

Meanwhile in Europe the influence of the Romantic poets, with their appreciation of the natural world, and the spread of empires opened up new windows on nature.

In many ways, Butterfly People is a boys? adventure story in which gun-toting naturalists imperil their lives just to touch the wing of a rare species. Today?s butterfly people will be enthralled, though outsiders perhaps less so. But the wonder Leach evokes will captivate all who appreciate the natural world.

Sensational Butterflies is at London?s Natural History Museum until 15?September

Former Pennsylvania state trooper kills wife then himself

By Brendan O'Brien

(Reuters) - A former Pennsylvania state trooper killed his estranged wife on Thursday before taking his own life in a Decatur Township grocery store, according to state police and local media.

Investigators said Mark Miscavish, 51, went to the County Market, where his wife Traci worked, found her in an upstairs office and shot her with a shotgun before shooting himself at about 10 a.m.

Traci Miscavish, 49, filed for divorce on Friday, according to Centredaily.com. Her husband was a state policeman for 15 years, the Web site said.

Mark Miscavish was arrested on January 23 after he allegedly assaulted his wife and threatened to kill her, according to Centredaily.com.

Traci Miscavish was granted a protection-from-abuse order while her husband faced charges stemming from the incident, the site said.

Decatur Township is about 130 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

New bone survey method could aid long-term survival of Arctic caribou

Mar. 27, 2013 ? A study co-authored by a University of Florida scientist adds critical new data for understanding caribou calving grounds in an area under consideration for oil exploration in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The research may be used to create improved conservation strategies for an ecologically important area that has been under evaluation for natural resource exploration since enactment of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980.

By studying bone accumulations on the Arctic landscape, lead author Joshua Miller discovered rare habitats near river systems are more important for some caribou than previously believed. The study appearing online today in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B shows bone surveys conducted on foot provide highly detailed and extensive data on areas used by caribou as birthing grounds.

"The bone surveys are adding a new piece of the puzzle, giving us a way of studying how caribou use the landscape during calving and providing a longer perspective for evaluating the importance of different regions and habitats," said Miller, an assistant scientist at the Florida Museum of Natural History on the UF campus and a Fenneman assistant research professor at the University of Cincinnati.

Unlike other species in the deer family, both male and female caribou grow antlers. Males shed them after they mate, while pregnant females keep their antlers until they calve, losing them within a day or two of giving birth. Newborn caribou calves also suffer high mortality rates within the first couple days of birth. The female antlers and newborn skeletal remains offer a unique biological signal for understanding calving activity, Miller said.

"This new tool has a lot of potential, and the idea that these bones are providing new information is really exciting -- bone surveys allow us to go into the field today and collect historical information about ecosystems and animal communities that are sometimes only known from a few years of observation," Miller said.

Miller recorded evidence of shed caribou antlers and newborn skeletons from the Porcupine Caribou Herd in area 1002 on the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge, which comprises about 1.5 million acres on Alaska's northeast border. Because these high-latitude habitats are frozen nearly three-quarters of the year, bones may be preserved on the landscape for hundreds or thousands of years, researchers said.

Testing two different habitats, the tussock tundra and riparian terraces, researchers found the latter has higher concentrations of shed female antlers and numerous newborn skeletons. The data suggests these terrace habitats are used more during some portions of the calving period than other areas traditionally viewed as primary calving terrain, which is important because they comprise less than 10 percent of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge calving grounds, Miller said.

"Bone surveys are suggesting that these riparian zones should be under special consideration as we think about how to manage the Arctic Refuge and ensure this herd prospers in the decades and centuries to come," Miller said.

The Porcupine Caribou Herd includes as many as 170,000 animals that are essential parts of the delicate Arctic ecosystem. These large, herbivorous, hoofed mammals are an important food source for many indigenous northern peoples and natural predators, including wolves, bears and eagles.

Anna Behrensmeyer, vertebrate paleontology curator at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, said that using skeletal remains as a research tool is important because it helps scientists understand which habitats need protection with minimal disruption to caribou calving. It also allows researchers to collect historical information that may be used to better understand how climate change and other human influences have affected how these animals use the landscape over time.

"We tend to think that what we see now is normal, but we're just seeing a little bit of time," said Behrensmeyer, who was not involved with the study. "Josh's work can extend our time window back maybe hundreds of years, so there's the chance of seeing long-term cycles in the calving areas and also correlating those cycles with climate -- if you can look back into the past, you might see what this species did to adapt its reproductive strategies to warmer or colder climate periods."

Study co-authors include Patrick Druckenmiller of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum and Volker Bahn of Wright State University.

S&P nears record as home price surge lifts stocks

NEW YORK (AP) ? More good news on the economy Tuesday drove the Standard & Poor's 500 index to within two points of its record closing high.

The S&P rose 12.08 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,563.77. Its record close of 1,565.16 was on Oct. 9, 2007, before the Great Recession and ensuing financial crisis battered markets.

Rising home prices and orders for manufactured goods drove all other major indexes higher as well. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 111.90 points, or 0.8 percent, to another record high ? 14,559.65.

"Unless something major comes along to derail this rally, it just seems like the market is going to keep climbing higher," said Marty LeClerc, the managing partner of Barrack Yard Advisors, an investment firm in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

Factory orders surged in February, helped by stronger demand for commercial aircraft. Overall orders for durable goods, a catchall term for products ranging from refrigerators to jumbo jets, jumped 5.7 percent from the previous month, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. It was the biggest increase in five months.

All 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 rose, led by health care and energy companies. But smaller companies, which have been beating the market all year, didn't do as well Tuesday. The Nasdaq composite rose 17.18 points, or 0.5 percent, to 3,252.48, and the Russell 2000 rose 3.97 points, or 0.4 percent, to 949.82.

Big-company stocks and small-company stocks often part ways, said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank in Chicago. Recently, Europe has been the reason. Big corporations generally do more business in Europe, and their stocks had wavered over the past week as traders watched negotiations to rescue Cyprus.

After a deal was announced Sunday, there was still uncertainty on Wall Street Monday. But by Tuesday, investors seemed back to focusing on the U.S. economy, and stocks of big companies rose the most.

By contrast, smaller companies are less exposed to the rest of the world. "That's part of the reason small-caps have outpaced the market this year," Ablin said. The Russell 2000 is up 11.8 percent this year, compared with 9.7 percent for the S&P 500.

European markets rose modestly as investors gained confidence in the new bailout plan arranged for Cyprus and its banking system. Cyprus decided to keep its banks closed for another two days in an attempt to ward off panicked withdrawals.

Netflix surged 5 percent, leading the S&P 500, after an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities said the stock will likely climb as the company continues to add subscribers. Netflix's database of its members' viewing habits should give it an edge in creating shows and draw more people to sign up for its video-streaming service, the analyst said. Netflix rose $9.82 to $190.61.

Housing prices rose in January at the fastest pace since the summer of 2006, before the housing bubble popped. The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index of prices in 20 cities was up 8.1 percent over January 2012. That compared with a 6.8 percent year-over-year increase in the index in December. Prices rose in all 20 cities, led by 23.2 percent in Phoenix and 17.5 percent in San Francisco.

The economic reports out Tuesday added to evidence that the economy is slowly improving, and that's what many investors want right now, LeClerc said. Slow growth and continued low inflation mean it could be a long time before the Federal Reserve starts unraveling its bond-buying program and raising interest rates.

In the market for U.S. government bonds, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note slipped to 1.91 percent from 1.92 percent late Monday.

Among other stocks making big moves Tuesday:

? Drive-in restaurant chain Sonic jumped 10 percent after reporting that its quarterly earnings more than doubled. Revenue was flat, but Sonic said it expects improvement. Its stock rose $1.14 to $12.87.

? Supervalu rose after announcing plans to lay off more than 1,000 people, roughly 3 percent of its workforce. The supermarket operator said its recent sale of five grocery chains means it needs fewer workers. Supervalu's stock gained 7 cents, or 1.4 percent, to $5.12.

? Children's Place Retail Stores sank 3 percent after the company reported weaker quarterly earnings. The retailer also said bad weather would crimp revenue. The company's stock lost $1.48 to $44.51.

Consumer confidence falls in March

In this March 5, 2013 photo, shoppers look at clothing on sale at the Footloose store in Mt. Lebanon, Pa. The Conference Board, a New York-based private research group, said its reading of consumer confidence fell in March after rebounding last month. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)

(AP) ? Americans are less confident in the economy than they were last month as massive government spending cuts have stoked economic uncertainty.

It's just the latest swing in the way Americans feel about the economy. Their views have fluctuated between optimism and angst over the months as they've weighed an advancing stock market and housing recovery against new economic challenges.

"From my standpoint, we're still in a stalled recovery," says Skip Tamke, a central New Jersey project manager for a computer storage company who lost a job last May that paid twice what he's earning now.

The Conference Board, a New York-based private research group, said Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index fell in March to 59.7 from a revised reading of 68 in February and the 68.7 that analysts polled by research firm FactSet expected. Confidence is still far off from the 90 reading that indicates a healthy economy.

The index is closely watched by economists because it makes a monthly gauge of how Americans are feeling about their jobs, incomes and other bread-and-butter issues. That's important because consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.

Anxiety about $85 billion in across-the-board government spending cuts that took effect March 1 caused the decline in the index, the group said. The spending reductions, which were triggered after Congress and the White House failed to resolve a budget impasse, have "created uncertainty regarding the economic outlook," Lynn Franco, the Conference Board's director of economic indicators, said in a statement

Congress and the Obama administration reached a deal on Jan. 1 to prevent income taxes from rising on most Americans. But they allowed a temporary cut in Social Security taxes to expire. For a worker earning $50,000 a year, take-home pay will shrink by about $1,000.

That has a more direct impact on most Americans than the government spending reductions, noted Scott Brown, chief economist at investment firm Raymond James.

The March drop in the confidence index "likely reflects the impact of higher gasoline prices as well as the higher payroll tax," Brown said. Although the payroll tax increase kicked in three months ago, its effect may just now be sinking in for some people, he says.

The Conference Board's survey was conducted from March 1 through March 14. The sharp decline in the March index was caused mainly by a drop in expectations for the economy, though consumers also were more pessimistic regarding current economic conditions, the group said. The number of people anticipating more jobs in the months ahead fell to 12.3 percent from 16.1 percent, while those expecting their incomes to increase slipped to 13.7 percent from 15.8 percent.

Consumers also are again pessimistic about the short-term outlook for the economy, the group said. The proportion of people expecting business conditions to improve over the next six months fell to 14.4 percent from 18 percent a month earlier, while those expecting conditions to worsen rose to 18.3 percent from 16.6 percent.

Chris Christopher, director of consumer economics at IHS Global Insight, said he expects consumer confidence to recover as the "shock value" of the mandated spending cuts wanes. However, "smaller paychecks, depressed consumer mood, and rising (gasoline) prices are not very favorable for elevated levels of discretionary spending," Christopher wrote in a research note.

The decline in consumer confidence comes as Americans are seeing some signs of an improving economy.

Stock prices have roughly doubled since June 2009. And the job market, while still tough, is rebounding. Employers added 236,000 jobs in February, driving the unemployment rate down to 7.7 percent, its lowest level in more than four years. The gains signaled that companies are confident enough in the economy to intensify hiring even in the face of tax increases and government spending cuts.

Americans spent more at retailers in February despite the smaller paychecks, according to a Commerce Department report issued on March 13. Much of the increase in retail sales compared with January reflected higher gasoline prices. But even excluding the volatile categories of gas, autos and building supply stores, so-called core retail sales rose strongly.

The healthier-than-expected numbers prompted some experts to revise their estimates of U.S. economic growth for the January-March quarter. And the Conference Board's measure of the U.S. economy's health over the next six months, reported on Thursday, increased in February from January.

But that says little about the current financial reality for Americans like Tamke, the central New Jersey resident. He says he was out of work for over eight months before he found his current position.

"I know I'm not pumping anything into the economy," he says. "I am barely able to pay my bills."

Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart among biggest losers at California

Auto Club Speedway typically is the butt of jokes around NASCAR because of half-empty seats and lackluster racing.

Not anymore.

Before a decent crowd at the two-mile track ner Fontana, Calif., the Auto Club 400 produced about everything you could want in a NASCAR race.

MORE: Stewart livid at Logano | Hamlin injured | Busch wins | Race results

Wild racing on the final restart. A last-lap crash during a battle for the lead.

A dramatic move to win by the race.

And some postrace fireworks, with an angry Tony Stewart going after Joey Logano.

Instead of being the butt of jokes, this race at California will be talked about for a while.

Here?s a look at the winners and losers from Sunday?s race:

Winners

Kyle Busch?Everyone was probably bracing for a Kyle-like tantrum after he lost a race he had dominated. But everything fell Busch's way for a change. Just when it looked like he was going to let another win slip away, he zoomed by the crashing cars of Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin for the victory. These are the kinds of races Busch needs to win.

Joey Logano?Logano could go on the winners list, or the losers list. It wasn't a great day when you consider that he let the win get away after leading with one lap to go; caused a wreck that sent former teammate Denny Hamlin to the hospital; and infuriated Tony Stewart for blocking him on a late restart. But, Logano led 41 laps and was in contention to win again. And his third-place finish was his best of the season and his first top-five with Penske Racing.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.?In case you missed it amid all the postrace hubbub, Earnhardt finished second and took over the points lead. It was a great performance, especially considering he overcame a late mistake on pit road by his crew.

Kurt Busch?A week after finishing fourth at Bristol, Busch finished fifth at California. He also had to rally from an early speeding penalty. Busch has stepped up big in his past two races, a good sign for his Furniture Row Racing team. Busch just might be able to beat the odds and carry this team to victory lane.

Carl Edwards? He was nowhere to be seen most of the race, but after the final restart, there he was, battling for the lead. Edwards finished fourth for his third top-five finish in five races. He also climbed to fourth in the standings, cementing his status as an early title contender.

Losers

Tony Stewart? No one can pitch a fit or express his anger quite like Stewart. Last year he threw his helmet at Matt Kenseth at Bristol. This time he shoved Logano and attempted to punch him after Logano blocked him on a late restart. Stewart once again stirred up plenty of drama. But he finished 22nd in a race he could have won. No wonder he was mad.

Denny Hamlin?Hamlin was the only driver who had a worse day than Stewart. Not only did he finish 25th after racing for the win on the final lap, but he was injured in the last-lap crash with Logano and got a trip to the hospital. Hopefully, Hamlin is not seriously injured. His feud with Logano is sure to continue after this.

Brad Keselowski? The defending champ entered the race with four consecutive top-five finishes. He was fast again at California, but nothing went his way. He had to start at the rear of the field after an engine change. Then, after charging through the field, he brushed the wall early in the race, and then got nabbed for speeding. After rallying from both incidents, he got shuffled back during late pit stops and restarts and wound up 23rd, costing him the points lead.

Clint Bowyer?Bowyer also tagged the wall early but he was rallying for a good finish until his engine blew with 15 laps remaining. He wound up 35th and lost 10 spots in the points standings.

Jimmie Johnson?Johnson finished 12th, but for most of the race he was headed toward his worst finish ever at Auto Club Speedway. A prerace favorite, Johnson struggled all day until rallying for a respectable finish at the end.

Why Pallets Are Great for DIYing (When You Pick Out the Right Ones)

Why Pallets Are Great for DIYing (When You Pick Out the Right Ones)We've seen countless upcycled and hacked together projects with wood shipping pallets over the years, and more often than not they're ugly, but totally useful. Pallets are great for the DIYer because they're cheap and easy to work with, but you do need to pay close attention to what you're grabbing.

DIYers have made some great upcycled projects from pallets and they're always a popular resource on sites like Instructables. But the appeal isn't always obvious at a glance, so let's look at why pallets are great for DIYing, and take a look at how to pick out the right kind so you don't accidently bring hazards into your house.

Why Pallets Are So Appealing for DIYers

Why Pallets Are Great for DIYing (When You Pick Out the Right Ones)At a glance, wood pallets are ugly, cheap wood that most people wouldn't bother using for kindling, let alone make a table out of one. Oddly, that's really the appeal of them. They're essentially Legos for adults because they can be turned into just about anything with minimal effort or skill.

It's also about upcycling and using materials that are already out there for new and creative uses. You can usually grab them for free from old warehouses and shipping areas. Since most pallets are about the same size, you can find directions online and get to building something without really knowing anything about woodworking.

It's not all about ease of use of use though. Pallets take a bit of work to tear apart, and since they're often treated with chemicals you need to use a mask when you're sawing into them. If you do want to make them look a little nicer, it takes a bit of work (including sanding and resealing the wood), but the appeal really isn't the look, it's just the function. Even a woodworking amateur can make something useful out of wood pallet in an afternoon. Photo by troye owens.

How to Pick the Right Wood Pallets

Why Pallets Are Great for DIYing (When You Pick Out the Right Ones)As you'd expect with anything that's using reclaimed materials, you need to watch what you're doing with pallets. As cabinetmaker and blogger Nike Love points out, pallets get exposed to everything from harsh chemicals to mold and bugs. Which is to say, even if a pallet looks good, you probably shouldn't be using it for a children's bed or a dining room table. As CBS News points out, pallets come into contact with all types of crazy things in their journeys, so it's important to pay attention to what you're grabbing.

That said, pallets are still excellent for outdoor projects, and if you can get a good idea of their history they're useful indoors too. Either way, you need to seriously clean them up before you get anywhere near the inside of your house. If you can find pallets with a "HT" (heat treated) stamp on them that means they're free of bugs, but it also means the wood may have been treated with chemicals. All modern pallets require a logo that says how it was treated, if there's no logo, don't bother with it.

Here are a few a few things to keep in mind when you're looking for a wood pallet:

  • Most pallets are reused throughout the industry and usually stay within an industry. That means you don't want pallets from a pesticide or chemical processing company because they're probably drenched in chemicals.
  • The nicest pallets seem to come from dry goods industries. They're usually shipping a lightweight, dry product, so there's no spillage or stains to worry about.
  • Termites are everywhere in pallets (and all outdoor wood really). Look for for tiny "wood piles" as a sign of infestation.
  • Old grocery store pallets might seem okay, but they're often covered in spillage and stains which leads to mold. Look at them closely and smell it. Common sense rules here (and with any pallet): if it looks weird, or it smells strange, don't take it.
  • Use gloves. This seems like common sense, but since pallets often have nails pointing out and can easily give you a splinter it's worth noting. If you're going to cut a pallet, use a mask.

It's entirely possible to grab pallets that are safe, but it's just as likely you'll grab one covered in chemicals. So, if you can trace the history you're better off. Picking up any reclaimed wood is going to come with a set of dangers, so be smart and keep your eyes out for signs of contaminants. Shipping pallets make for easy weekend projects for regardless of your skill, and when you choose the right ones they'll last a surprisingly long time. Photo by Tatiana Popova/Shutterstock.

Sports in Cuba: Another Achievement of the Revolution - Cuba's ...

Havana?s Sports City Complex arena. Photo: tribuna.co.cu

HAVANA TIMES ? Before the January 1, 1959 triumph of the Cuban Revolution, sports in Cuba was limited to four professional baseball teams and a few outstanding individuals, who were always self-made individuals since the sports and recreation system of that time totally lacked governmental support.

In the pre-revolutionary era there was no sports infrastructure. Baseball was played almost exclusively in the capital. Nor did the country have sports schools. Participation in sports was limited to youth from wealthy families. In the private schools they attended were some facilities for engaging in sports, though almost never for serious competition.

When the revolution triumphed, physical culture and sports were recognized by the government as a right of the people and a way to promoting and maintaining good health. At that time, the building of the sports infrastructure began that would enable Cuba to develop its sports movement and achieve massive participation in sports across the country.

Over the past 54 years ? despite being a poor country without major natural resources, (depending essentially on imported oil for its energy needs), despite its population having doubled, and being subjected to an economic, trade and financial blockade (whose avowed aim is to ?create difficulties, hunger and disease so that the people themselves overthrow the government?) ? Cuba?s sports infrastructure was developed. As a result, this has turned the country into a powerhouse in that realm.

It?s difficult to summarize in a short review everything that has been done in the country in terms of sports. Nevertheless, the outcomes speak for themselves. From the start of the Olympic Games in 1896 up until 1956 ? a span of over 60 years ? Cuba won only four Olympic gold medals.

However, starting from nothing, in its 54 years of revolution the island won 67 gold medals by 2012.

In all the Pan American Games in which Cuba has participated, it has always come in second place, behind the United States ? except for the games held on the island (1991), where it came in first place, and in 1951 when it finished third. Prior to 1959 there were two Pan-American Games (in 1951 and 1955), in which Cuba won a total of 10 gold medals. After 1959, we?ve brought home 829 gold medals.

Cuba has developed a sports infrastructure throughout the country, including baseball stadiums in all provincial capitals and in some municipalities, many of them lighted for nighttime play.

A sports facility complex was built in Havana for holding the 1991 Pan American Games, one that includes facilities for all sports.

As for the system of school sports, this covers the entire country and culminates with the High Performance Athletes Training School, in Havana. However special mention is deserved by the Manuel Fajardo Higher Institute of Physical Culture, also in Havana, a university dedicated to sports and physical culture.

Sports Assistance Abroad

In the field of sports cooperation, Cuba currently provides technical assistance to more than 50 countries, to which it dedicates more than 8,000 teachers and coaches. As a result of this collaboration ? to cite only one example ? in the 2003 Pan American Games, Cuban coaches were involved with 71 teams from 17 countries. In the 2008 Olympics, the island had 18 collaborators (including coaches, physiotherapists and physicians) working with teams from 14 countries.

Hundreds of teachers, coaches and sports specialists from Third World countries have graduated in Cuba from sports schools or the institute mentioned above. Cuba also created the International School of Physical Education and Sports, which is attended by over 1,300 students from 71 countries.

In the field of sports medicine, Cuba cooperates with other Latin American countries, with these having access to the Institute of Sports Medicine. In addition, an anti-doping testing laboratory was built on the island, the fifth in the Americas, to provide services to developing countries in the fight against drug abuse, which is so damaging to sports and athletes.

In this brief summary I?ve tried to reflect what the Cuban Revolution has done in the field of sports, regarded as a right of the people, citing only the most salient issues ? since several books could be written on this subject.

Here I?ve referred only to ?muscular sports,? since I plan to discuss chess in a forthcoming post.

Paint-on plastic electronics: Aligning polymers for high performance

Mar. 24, 2013 ? Semiconducting polymers are an unruly bunch, but University of Michigan engineers have developed a new method for getting them in line that could pave the way for cheaper, greener, "paint-on" plastic electronics.

"This is for the first time a thin-layer, conducting, highly aligned film for high-performance, paintable, directly writeable plastic electronics," said Jinsang Kim, U-M professor of materials science and engineering, who led the research published in Nature Materials.

Semiconductors are the key ingredient for computer processors, solar cells and LED displays, but they are expensive. Inorganic semiconductors like silicon require high temperatures in excess of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit and costly vacuum systems for processing into electronics, but organic and plastic semiconductors can be prepared on a basic lab bench.

The trouble is that charge carriers, like electrons, can't move through plastics nearly as easily as they can move through inorganic semiconductors, Kim said. Part of the reason for this is because each semiconducting polymer molecule is like a short wire, and these wires are randomly arranged.

"Charge mobility along the polymer chains is much faster than between the polymers," Kim said.

To take advantage of the good conduction along the polymers, research groups have been trying to align them into a charge-carrying freeway, but it's a bit like trying to arrange nanoscopic linguine.

Kim's group approached the problem by making smarter semiconducting polymers. They wanted a liquid polymer solution they could brush over a surface, and the molecules would automatically align with one another in the direction of the stroke, assembling into high-performance semiconducting thin-layer films.

First, they designed the polymers to be slippery -- ordinary polymers glom together like flat noodles left in the fridge, Kim said. By choosing polymers with a natural twist, the team kept them from sticking to one another in the solution. But in order to align during the brushstroke, the polymers needed to subtly attract one another. Flat surfaces would do that, so the team designed their polymer to untwist as the solvent dried up.

They stopped the unaligned polymers from forming large chunks by adding flexible arms that extended off to the sides of the flat, wire-like polymer. These arms prevented too much close contact among the polymers while the bulkiness of the arms kept them from snagging on one another. Polymers with these properties will line up in the direction of an applied force, such as the tug of a paintbrush.

"It's a big breakthrough," Kim said. "We established a complete molecular design principle of semiconducting polymers with directed alignment capability."

And it works. The team made molecules that matched their design and built a device for spreading the polymer solution over surfaces such as glass or a flexible plastic film. The force from the silicon blade, moving at a constant speed across the liquid polymer, was enough to align the molecules.

The team then built the semiconducting film into a simple transistor, a version of the electronic components that make up computer processors. The device demonstrated the importance of the polymer alignment by showing that charge carriers moved 1,000 times faster in the direction parallel to the silicon blade's brushstroke than they did when crossing the direction of the stroke.

"By combining the established molecular design principle with a polymer that has a very good intrinsic charge carrier mobility, we believe it will make a huge difference in organic electronics," he said. "We are currently developing a versatile fabrication method in order to realize high-performance and paintable plastic electronics in various length scales from nanometers to meters."

Kim believes that the technique will work equally well with atomic-scale pen nibs or large trowel-like applicators for making electronics of all sizes such as LED displays or light-absorbing coatings for solar cells.

The paper is titled "A molecular design principle of lyotropic liquid-crystalline conjugated polymers with directed alignment capability for plastic electronics."

The work is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Two authors of the paper were partly supported by National Science Foundation and WCU program of National Research Foundation of Korea. The university is pursuing patent protection for the intellectual property and is seeking commercialization partners to help bring the technology to market.

Elaine Stritch ditching NYC for Michigan, playing last show at Caf? Carlyle

By Brent Lang

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The raspy voiced, theatrical endurance legend known as Elaine Stritch is doing the unthinkable.

The Tony Award winner and "30 Rock" star is picking up and leaving New York City for her home state of Michigan, but she is not - we repeat - not retiring.

The 88-year old Stritch insisted in an interview with the New York Times, that her move doesn't spell curtains on a career that has been distinguished by her long association with composer Stephen Sondheim.

"What actor would ever say they're done?" Stritch told the paper.

If she does continue to perform, it's the end of an era for Stritch and the theater world. The Times reports that she has lived in New York City for 71 years, after arriving in Manhattan from Detroit for finishing school.

Fans of the actress will have one more opportunity to say goodbye and see her perform in her favorite venue, the Caf? Carlyle, which also happens to be in the same building where she maintains a suite.

Her final engagement, "Elaine Stritch at the Carlyle: Movin' Over and Out," will play for one week only, from April 2 through April 6.

Like her award-winning Broadway show "Elaine Stritch: At Liberty" it will merge songs and life stories - many of which deal with her struggles with alcoholism and memories of high-profile romances. If audiences are lucky, and for a $125 cover charge they deserve be, she'll treat them to a rendition of her signature number, "The Ladies Who Lunch."
