Clean up in Palmetto after tornado touched down

Right around dinnertime Tuesday night, a tornado zeroed in on a Manatee County mobile home park. The storm came in strong and fast.

The tornado only impacted a few homes, but it left its mark.

For John Kadlick, Wednesday was moving day.

He loaded up clothes and belongings onto a trailer hooked up to a golf cart and hauled his stuff away from his destroyed home.

He recalled, "I sat down, I started watching TV and about 30 seconds after that, the roof took off of my trailer."

The National Weather Service says an EF-0 tornado briefly touched down at the Tropic Isles Mobile home park in Palmetto.

"These roofs, when they went off, it sounded like a bomb had went off," said neighbor Richard Walkey.

In about a minute, the brief twister wreaked havoc on at least five homes.? Kadlick's home is now unlivable, so he's buying a friend's house just down the street.

He's thankful the damage wasn't worse.

Kadlick said, "I could've gone with it. The damn roof lifted off right above me; I was only six feet from the ceiling."

Police say looters have been eyeing some of the belongings inside these empty houses, so now officers have been patrolling the streets.

The tornado tore off chunks of houses.?

Bobbie Tischer came home to find the roof of her carport missing.

Turns out, it was in a canal behind her house.

Tischer said, "The good news is, it was the carport roof. The house is still standing, and no one got hurt."

And that was the consensus around here. This situation is unfortunate, but it could've been a lot worse.
