Madonna Explains Cutting Lourdes' 'W.E.' Cameo

'I just kind of dragged her in at the last minute,' Madge explains to MTV News of her daughter's short-lived role.

Madonna worked with a number of skilled thespians on "W.E.," but when it came to one smaller role in the film, which opens Friday, the pop star/director knew of one up-and-comer she felt would be perfect for the role: her daughter, Lourdes.

"There was a scene where she played Wally as a young girl," she told MTV News about her daughter's role as the teen version of Abbie Cornish's character, a modern-day American obsessed with the romance between American divorcée Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII. "And I just kind of dragged her in at the last minute. It was quite unfair of me what I did and what I asked her to do."

Cornish teased Lourdes' appearance to us back in March 2011, but, as it sometimes happens in Hollywood, Lourdes' bit part will remain unseen. "But she was really great and then I ended up cutting her out of the film. Ruthless, I know," Madge teased. "I said, 'Sorry babe, you're on the cutting room floor.' She took it like a champ."

Making the choice to not include Lourdes was one of the many decisions the Queen of Pop had to make while shooting the film. But, hard decisions come easy to Madonna and the experience of shooting this film has only heightened her desire to direct more in the future.

"Yes, watch out Visconti!" she laughed. "No, I'm not a blockbuster kind of a girl, I don't think. But I do love the idea of making a sweeping epic romance. And now that I know how to make a film in three different countries, with several different time periods and lots of different accents; I think I'm qualified."

Do you plan on seeing "W.E." in theaters? Let us know in the comments section!

China to make Shanghai global yuan hub by 2015 (Reuters)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? China intends to establish Shanghai as the global centre for yuan trading, clearing and pricing over the next three years as part of broader plans to make the commercial hub an international financial centre by 2020.

The plan for Shanghai's financial innovations through 2015, published jointly by the country's economic planning agency and the Shanghai government on Monday, set goals on a wide range of areas aimed at further developing Shanghai, though some analysts said many of them appeared ambitious.

"This anticipated pace of development looks a bit quick to me," said Frances Cheung, a strategist at Credit Agricole in Hong Kong.

China wants to transform Shanghai into an international financial centre on par with the likes of New York and London by 2020. That goal was set in 2009 by the State Council and analysts have taken it as a broad deadline for liberalizing the currency.

The state economic planning agency, the National Development and Reform Commission, outlined a series of goals under the 2015 yuan plan.

These included making the daily yuan mid-point published by the central bank in the onshore yuan market serve as the benchmark for both domestic and foreign yuan trading markets.

Currency traders interpreted the statement partly as a message from Beijing that the yuan's movements, which have increasingly been influenced by the offshore market over the past few months, should be decided by the government.

"There have been recent developments that have put Hong Kong's offshore market in the spotlight from time to time, such as its pricing of the yuan quite differently from the onshore market," said a trader at a European bank in Shanghai.

"In this sense, the NDRC statement is published at a sensitive time and means the government once again wants to emphasize that it has the final say in the value of the yuan."

The plan also aims to make the government-backed Shanghai Interbank Offered Rate (Shibor) the benchmark for yuan credit everywhere and targeting to more than double the annual non-forex financial market trading volume to 1,000 trillion yuan by 2015.

While the plan lacked details on how China would achieve these targets, analysts were skeptical on the feasibility of some of the planks in the platform.

"Shibor is not even a very well established benchmark onshore," Cheung said. Markets currently use the government's seven-day repurchase rate as the lending benchmark.

Analysts said the NDRC's plan gave no fresh insight into how quickly China would liberalize its capital account, a crucial step in Shanghai's attempt to become a global money hub.

China has taken a series of measures over the past two years to invigorate the offshore yuan market in Hong Kong as part of a longer-term plan to promote the use of the yuan overseas and make it a fully-convertible and international reserve currency along with the U.S. dollar.

Earlier this month, Britain said it was teaming up with its former colony to secure London a top spot as an offshore trading centre for the yuan.

The NDRC's plan would not threaten Hong Kong's current position as the main offshore yuan centre, analysts said.

"Promoting Shanghai as an onshore yuan centre complements Hong Kong's growing role as an offshore yuan center, and should help to strengthen the circle of onshore-offshore yuan flows underpinning the yuan trade settlement process," said Donna H J Kwok, economist at HSBC in Hong Kong.

China will also encourage overseas companies to sell yuan-denominated shares in its domestic stock markets, but the plan did not give a detailed timetable.

Authorities have been discussing launching a so-called "international board" on the Shanghai stock exchange for listing foreign companies' shares, seen as a centerpiece for the 2020 goal, but the city's mayor said this month that the time was not currently right for its launch.

Shanghai will explore M&A opportunities involving overseas stock exchanges to increase its global clout, the NDRC's plan said without elaborating.

Could A Club Drug Offer 'Almost Immediate' Relief From Depression?

Ketamine has been used as an anesthetic for decades. It's also a widely popular but illegal club drug known as "Special K." When administered in low doses, patients report a rapid reduction in depression symptoms.

There's no quick fix for severe depression.

Although antidepressants like Prozac have been around since the 1970s, they usually take weeks to make a difference. And for up to 40 percent of patients, they simply don't work.

As a result, there are limited options when patients show up in an emergency room with suicidal depression.

The doctors and nurses at Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston say they see this problem every day.

You can get a sense of what they're up against by visiting the cavernous, bustling emergency center at Ben Taub, which is part of the massive Texas Medical Center. More than 100,000 patients a year get emergency care here and about 5,000 of them need psychiatric evaluation.

Ben Taub General Hospital

Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston sees 100,000 emergency patients a year, 5,000 of whom need psychiatric evaluation.

?

The hospital's 24-hour Psychiatric Emergency Center gets a steady stream of people with suicidal depression, says Charlzta McMurray-Horton, who is in charge of mental health nursing.

"If the police bring them in, they're going to come through this door," McMurray-Horton says, pointing to one entrance. "If the ambulance brings them in, they're going to come through this door," she says, pointing to a different entrance.

And one of the challenges in treating these severely depressed patients is that there simply isn't any drug that provides quick relief, says Anu Matorin, medical director of the Psychiatric Emergency Center.

Matorin talks about one recent patient. The woman had suffered bouts of depression since college, Matorin says. But after she had a baby, it became severe. She stopped eating and sleeping. She began to think about suicide.

Finally, the woman made a desperate call to her mother, Matorin says.

"She was very emotional, very tearful, not making sense," Matorin says. "She says, 'I just can't take it anymore. I don't know how to feed the child.' The mother could hear the infant crying in the background."

The family called 9-1-1 and the woman arrived at the hospital with a police escort. Matorin says she evaluated the woman and put her on antidepressants.

Then came the hard part, Matorin says. She knew the drugs might help the woman eventually. But they weren't going to do anything about her suicidal thoughts during the next few critical days.

So Matorin did the only thing she could for her patient. She admitted her to the hospital's locked inpatient unit.

I ask to see the facility, so McMurray Horton takes me there.

'Keep Them Safe, Keep Them Alive'

The unit can handle 20 patients, and its main room is warmer, softer and more colorful than you might expect. Think Holiday Inn, without any sharp objects or hard edges.

But there's no avoiding the fact that this is a place where safety is paramount and privacy isn't, says McMurray-Horton. Shatterproof plastic windows around the nurses' station provide unobstructed sight-lines to pretty much everywhere.

"Patients don't want to be here," says McMurray-Horton, explaining that about three-quarters of them are in the unit because they have been deemed a threat to themselves or someone else.

So it's not surprising that our tour of the unit is interrupted by the loud protests of one enraged patient.

Units like this are necessary in part because drugs for depression don't work fast enough to help someone in the early days of a crisis, Matorin says.

And McMurray-Horton says staff members here have a simple goal for patients in crisis: "Keep them safe, keep them alive until they're in a different space."

Counseling can help, McMurray-Horton says. So can family. And she says most people in crisis just start to feel better after a few days in a place where staff make sure that "they stay in and the world stays out."

That was certainly true of the depressed young mother that Matorin admitted. She got better and went home several days later.

But that woman probably could have skipped the hospital stay altogether if the drugs used to treat depression were as quick and effective as, say, painkillers, Matorin says.

If drugs were more effective, "I think it would transform psychiatric care and really eliminate some of the stigma and fear and concern about treatment," she says.

'A Completely Different Mechanism'

A growing number of scientists think it won't be long before psychiatric care is transformed.

Traditional antidepressants like Prozac work on a group of chemical messengers in the brain called the serotonin system. Researchers once thought that a lack of serotonin was the cause of depression, and that these drugs worked simply by boosting serotonin levels.

Recent research suggests a more complicated explanation. Serotonin drugs work by stimulating the birth of new neurons, which eventually form new connections in the brain. But creating new neurons takes time ? a few weeks, at least ? which is thought to explain the delay in responding to antidepressant medications.

Ketamine, in contrast, activates a different chemical system in the brain ? the glutamate system. Researcher Ron Duman at Yale believes that ketamine rapidly increases the communication among existing neurons by creating new connections. This is a quicker process than waiting for new neurons to form and accomplishes the same goal of enhancing brain circuit activity.

To study how ketamine might work, Duman turned to rats. The first image below shows the neuron of a rat that has received no ketamine treatment. The small bumps and spots on the side of the neuron are budding connections between neurons.

Ronald Duman/Yale University

Just hours after giving the rats doses of ketamine, Duman saw a dramatic increase in the number of new connections between brain cells. This increase in neuronal connectivity is thought to relieve depression.

And they are particularly excited about an experimental drug that's being tried over in the NeuroPsychiatric Center next to Ben Taub Hospital.

It's here that drug researchers are studying a drug that's unlike anything now used to treat depression. And they're giving it to patients who haven't done well on existing drugs.

One of these patients is Heather Merrill, who speaks to me in a small conference room that's part of the large and very busy outpatient clinic.

Merill is 41, with three kids and nice house in the suburbs.

"I've suffered from depression for most of my adult life," she says. "It got to the point where I kind of felt like there wasn't going to be anything that was going to be able to help me."

At times her depression gets so bad she can't take care of her family or even herself, she says. And that's how she was feeling the day before, she says, when doctors placed an IV in her arm and began to administer a drug.

Because it was part of an experiment, there were two possibilities. The drug could have been just a sedative. Or it might have been something called ketamine.

Ketamine has been used for decades as an anesthetic. It's also become a wildly popular but illegal club drug known as "Special K."

Mental health researchers got interested in ketamine because of reports that it could make depression vanish almost instantly.

In contrast, drugs like Prozac take weeks or even months. And the frustrating thing is that depression medications really haven't changed much since Prozac arrived in the 1970s, says Sanjay Mathew from Baylor College of Medicine, who is in charge of the ketamine study at Ben Taub.

"Everything since then has been essentially incremental," he says. "There have been tweaks of existing molecules."

But ketamine represents much more than a tweak, Mathews says.

"It's a completely different mechanism," he says. "And the focus is on really rapidly helping someone get out of a depressive episode."

'No More Fogginess. No More Heaviness'

Heather Merrill says she's pretty sure it was ketamine that flowed into her veins 24 hours earlier.

"It was almost immediate, the sense of calmness and relaxation," she says.

Some of the doctors think she might be right.

"Her demeanor has changed tremendously," says Dr. Asim Shah, who directs the mood disorder program at Ben Taub. "She looks like a happy person who is genuinely happy, whereas before the study, she looked very down, very withdrawn, sort of almost tearful."

But of course, nobody knows whether Merrill actually got ketamine. That information will be kept secret until the study is done, months from now.

So I decide to see how Merrill's experience compares with those of people who definitely took ketamine for depression.

I talk to Carlos Zarate, who does ketamine research at the NIH and has never met Merrill. Zarate says patients typically say, "'I feel that something's lifted or feel that I've never been depressed in my life. I feel I can work. I feel I can contribute to society.' And it was a different experience from feeling high. This was feeling that something has been removed."

I compare this to what Heather Merrill said about her experience: "No more fogginess. No more heaviness. I feel like I'm a clean slate right now. I want to go home and see friends or, you know, go to the grocery store and cook the family dinner."

The similarities are hard to ignore.

And researchers say the consistent patient reactions have actually made it more difficult to do good studies of ketamine. The drug's effects are so powerful and distinctive, they say, it's hard to prevent doctors and patients in an experiment from figuring out who got the drug and who didn't.

Nora Zelevansky: Project Runway All Stars Recap: The Fatest, Most Tasteful Challenge Ever

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Episode 4 of Lifetime's "Project Runway All Stars."

Faced with a "wagon wheel coffee table" in "When Harry Met Sally," Carrie Fisher's character Marie famously quips, "Everybody thinks they have good taste and a sense of humor, but they couldn't possibly all have good taste."

Truer words were never spoken, at least when it comes to this week's episode of "Project Runway All Stars." The challenge is supposedly "all about taste" on many levels, but everyone seem most concerned with the pun.

Angela Lindvall announces that the designers are to "create a tasteful outfit inspired by the colors and flavors of a seriously tasty dessert: gelato!" Really? It seems to me that there are more inspiring sweets, but what the heck?

On the runway, they feature a cart bearing the brand "L'Arte del Gelato" and ask the designers to pick flavors. Michael chooses grapefruit, Mondo picks cantaloupe, Rami -- who, for some reason, expects to be picked last because the designers choose their own order a la teams in gym class -- gets his beloved kiwi anyway.

That's when they roll out the big guns: Diane von Furstenberg. Yup. She's a guest judge this week and, while I'm still trying to figure out what she has to do with gelato, she announces that this is "the fastest challenge in 'Project Runway' history."

[Note: I may suggest that you turn this episode into a drinking game, taking a shot every time they repeat that phrase over the course of the hour.]

Anyway, the designers have only six hours in which to complete their ice cream-inspired garment. They sketch for 30 minutes as per usual and then off they go to what seems to be an annex of Mood, where April can't find any black jersey and Mondo accidentally doesn't get enough fabric.

Mila says she can imagine making a pair of leggings in six hours, but a whole outfit? Not so much. Kenley says her strategy is not to try anything new because she really just has to get something done. Don't get me wrong, I think she makes sweet dresses, but isn't that kind of always her strategy? Doesn't she always do a variation on the same thing?

Kara is left with chocolate and cayenne pepper flavored gelato and is disappointed. She wants to work with colors anyway, focusing less on the obvious brown and more on the chili flavor, which she describes as, "Chocolaty, spicy and then this furnace of fire." On the whole, the designers are taking this challenge super literally -- just going on color -- so I like that she's making that leap at least.

Austin laments, "Normally a fashion designer would never be in the predicament of having to design something in six hours." But Michael disagrees. He says this challenge is not a big deal because he works super fast and often has to whip things up for clients last minute. Jerell says that Michael's dress is "so easy a chimpanzee could do it." He also says April is going to need to "soften up" her layered purple strapless number.

That's when Joanna Coles walks in to mentor the designers and my husband looks up from his laptop long enough to ask, "Why is Tilda Swinton on 'Project Runway'?" Good question.

The Marie Claire editor announces that this is "the fastest challenge in 'Project Runway' history!" [CHUG!]

Joanna meets first with Kara, who explains that the colors on her dress will go from neutral to fire red like the flavor of her chocolate and cayenne gelato. The idea seems okay, but the colors look kinda drab.

Next, Joanna asks April: "How can you have a fashion moment if you stay with what you're comfortable with?"

She asks Mondo, "How on earth do you accessorize [with this type of dress]?"

She commands Austin, who has vanilla Madagascar flavor, "Don't channel the wedding thing; channel the fabulousness!"

She asks Rami, who is making a wrap skirt, "Are you sucking up to Diane von Furstenberg?"

Suddenly, it feels as if maybe the producers have given her questions and she's interviewing them? She asks Michael about his speed, "What is your secret?"

Then, the designers get catty for a moment. Anthony calls Mila's dress a "color block Christmas ornament disaster." Mila feels that "Rami's look is of questionable taste." Kara pisses off Austin and suddenly, it almost turns into sewing machine wars. Is anyone else starting to feel like Kara is sort of unconscious and not that considerate?

Anyway, the models show up and disaster strikes: April's dress doesn't fit her model and she doesn't have enough fabric to fix the problem. Tush will be exposed.

Jerell is into Mondo's dress. Wait? A designer has something positive to say about another? How nice and novel! He thinks it really embodies the fruit, but in a "modern abstract way." I agree.

April admits, "I'm definitely nervous because of how short the dress is. The bottom is not symmetrical." Kara says her dress' proportions are off. Jerell adds, "She had her [model] looking like a pregnant cupcake -- that's not the business." Well, he can't be nice about everything.

    The Runway:

And just like that, they're back at the runway. Angela makes her first joke: "Seems like I just saw you a few hours ago!" You did, Angela! Because, as she reminds us again, this is "the fastest challenge in 'Project Runway' history." [BOTTOMS UP!]

The judges are Marchesa's Georgina Chapman, Isaac Mizrahi, DVF (mais oui!) and model Miranda Kerr, who will wear the winning garment to ... something.

For me, Mondo's dress looks best coming down the runway. It moves, it's very resort and it really does evoke a cantaloupe. I'm with Jerell. And actually, Jerell has made a nice maxi dress too -- a little less literal with a pattern evoking his quirky flavor "Fruits From The Forest." I sort of feel bad for Rami because I feel like he's choking a little, but I think his kiwi number is a hot mess. Kara's dress is obviously not working: It looks like an ice cream cone with ruffles all the way up the front. And, when it comes to April's strapless frock, there's definitely some butt action showing.

    The Highest & Lowest Scores:

Kara is on the bottom. Georgina says, "I couldn't quite get the passion in the dress. I think the colors are letting you down." DVF adds: "It's just not flattering." hey all think it looks kind of pregnant.

Anthony is also in the bottom, though Isaac likes his explanation about melting green tea gelato. The construction is messy. DVF loves the skirt and concept, but that's about it.

For Mila, Isaac says, "I think this says cherry ice cream so clearly." I'm sort of surprised this dress is on the top with it's strange sheer red and white effect, but I think it was slim pickings this week since the designers had only six hours. (The only thing I can effectively complete in six hours is a "Project Runway" marathon.) DVF comments, "It's beautiful and the design is nice, but it kind of looks like it was done in short time." I agree.

Michael kisses some DVF butt and calls her an idol. She loves his dress, calling it "very fluid" and tells him to "call her." Georgina and Isaac think a "tartness" is missing from the color. I sorta think it looks like nicely draped satin pajamas, but whatever.

April's dress is a problem. "The back is scary," says Isaac. "The colors are nice," the judges offer. These guys are so nice and gentle compared to Nina, Michael and Heidi. It's so different.

Mondo's cantaloupe dress is a hit. DVF says, "I think it's great. It does look like a cantaloupe." Georgina says the colors and patterns shouldn't work together, but they do. They aren't sure about the bright orange he used, but -- I mean -- it's cantaloupe, so.

    Deliberation & Decision:

They mostly agree: Anthony was ambitious, but his piece looked amateurish. Kara designs sweet clothing, but got stuck. Angela feels that Kara got scared of using brown and says, "What's wrong with chocolate brown?" Isaac retorts, "There is plenty wrong with chocolate brown." A bit of a disagreement -- finally! DVF says April's dress was like Halloween.

Michael's fabric was questionable. Mila's styling was heavy. Mondo's dress was gorgeous, but didn't show enough skin for Isaac. Then, Miranda Kerr comes up with my favorite reason yet for not picking a dress to win, saying that she's concerned about wearing Michael's dress without a bra while breast feeding. I love it! Now that is reality. (She is crazy pretty, by the way.)

    Anyway ...

    The Winner: Michael!
Going Home: It's between April and Kara and ultimately, April is out. And yet, it's Kara who flips. She turns to the judges through rising tears and practically shouts, "I am really passionate about what I do!" Wait a minute, girl: You're not the one going home! Backstage, when she screams with happiness at getting to stay, Anthony has to remind her, "But that means April is going home." Tacky tacky all day long.

And that's all she wrote for this week's PRAS!

"Project Runway All Stars" airs at 9 p.m. EST on Thursday on Lifetime.

    Iolo System Mechanic 10.7

If sluggish PC performance is giving you the blues, you'd do well to invest in the $39.95 Iolo System Mechanic 10.7, a utility suite?designed to blow the virtual dust out of worn machines by repairing the registry, defragging the hard drive, and eliminating files that stymie snappy performance. Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 serves up a host of new features not present in previous builds we've reviewed, including Designated Drivers which manages drivers in an attempt to keep your PC problem free. All in all, Iolo System Mechanic remains one of the best PC tune-up utilities around, as it digs deep, cleans up PCs well, and offers informative, easy-to-understand help about the problems that plague computers.

    System Requirements and Interface
Compatible with Windows 7, Vista, and XP PCs, Iolo System Mechanics 10 requires just 30MB of disk space, 256MB of RAM, and an Internet connection for activating the license.?Unlike most PC tune-up utilities such as TuneUp Utilities 2012 (4 stars, $49.95), which limit you on the number of licenses, Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 lets you install the software on any number of computers provided that it's not for business purposes?a welcome feature in the age of the multi-PC household.

The interface looks very similar to previous entries in the Iolo System Mechanic family with the familiar red-white-and-blue color scheme. Like the previous version of System Mechanic, this version has several options in the left pane (Overview, Problems, Automated Tasks, Anti-malware, Firewall, All-in-One Tools, Individual Tools) the content of which appears in the main pane when clicked.

Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 also installs a useful widget on the desktop that gives you at-a-glance PC health and security readings. From this widget, you can launch any number of Iolo System Mechanic 10.7's features to begin the clean up process.

    The Clean Up Process
The Overview screen opens by default when the program is launched, and it's where the "Analyze Now" button lives. Clicking the arrow next to it opened drop-down box that presented two choices: "Perform Quick Analysis" and "Perform Deep Analysis." The former is a one- to two-minute scan that looks for the most common PC problems; the latter is a five- to seven-minute scan that checks for all problems. Considering the heavy use that our test laptop had received, I went with the second option. Approximately six minutes later finished the scan and uncovered over 2,000 problems.

Beneath the reading appeared a highlighted message: "Boost speed and stability by removing redundant programs with CRUDD Remover." CRUDD is Iolo's acronym for Commonly Redundant or Unnecessary Decelerators and Destabilizers?fancy talk for duplicate programs that clog your system. The idea behind CRUDD Remover is to eliminate those extra programs as each application install theoretically slows your PC's performance a bit. After running CRUDD Remover, 9 problems were detected on the PC, which were explained in wonderful detail on the "Problems" screen.

What I found truly cool was that Iolo System Mechanic 10 didn't just serve up a number?it provided blurbs that explained why these problems negatively impact performance. I checked off all nine problems, clicked the "Repair All" button, and performed the required reboot. Performing another deep scan revealed that all but one problem was fixed, and that straggler was one beyond Iolo System Mechanic 10.7's scope: No installed anti-malware program was detected on the system.

I also ran Iolo's patent-pending Program Accelerator, which smartly re-aligns all of a program's dependent files on the hard drive. It's touted as being better than disk defragmenters, which can blindly compact and separate files even more. Program Accelerator took approximately 15 minutes for to work its magic, and, when it was done, I discovered that it had re-aligned over 30,000 files and eliminated nearly 100 file fragments. Four further files were defragmented after a restart.

    Performance Improvements
I tested Iolo System Mechanic 10.7's ability to whip a PC back into shape by performing three tests?running the Geekbench system performance tool, measuring boot times, and transferring a 1.1GB folder of mixed media to external storage?before and after running the software to compare the computer's potency. Each test was run three times and averaged. Before AVG PC Tuneup 2011 scrubbed the system, the 2-GHz Intel Core i7 X990 Style-Note notebook with 4GB of RAM, and an 80GB Intel SSD drive achieved a 5,903 Geekbench score, booted in 50.3 seconds, and transferred the 1.1GB folder in 40.5 seconds.

After using Iolo System Mechanic 10.7, the system saw the most improved performance of all the tune-up utilities tested: The GeekBench score rose to 6064 (better than TuneUp Utilities 2012's 6045); the boot time decreased to just 37.1 seconds (on a par with TuneUp Utilities 2012's 37 seconds). The file transfer speed dropped to 40.8 seconds (swifter than TuneUp Utilities 2012's 41.1 seconds).?The overall system performance was incredibly fast and snappy?windows and menus opened in a blink.

    Designated Drivers and NetBooster
Designated Drivers, a new feature to version 10.7, helps you find and install safe drivers for your computer?drivers that have been tested and certified by Microsoft. I liked that this driver utility is a part of Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 and not a separate application (which is the case with SlimWare Utilities SlimCleaner and SlimWare Utilities DiverUpdate). Designated Drivers found two driver updates for my PC, but Slimware Utilities DriverUpdate found a whopping 74.

The NetBooster internet booster is designed to stabilize and speed up your internet connection by optimizing settings?Iolo states that it's beneficial to run it before playing Web-connected video games and assists in opening Web pages faster. Cracked.com loaded in 5.9 seconds before running NetBooster, which decreased slightly (after clearing the browser's Internet history, rebooting, and activating the tool) to 5.3 seconds?a marginal increase.

Should You Use Iolo System Mechanic 10.7?
The answer is a resounding yes. Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 has simple interface, easy-to-understand problem definitions, and a deep array of performance-enhancing tools that produce excellent all-around scores. Iolo System Mechanic remains the PC tune-up-utility champion.

Growing number of car buyers steer clear of imports

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

Detroit automakers have long abandoned their ?Buy American? campaigns, but the public?s interest in bringing more manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. seems to be paying off.??Nearly one in seven people?who bought new cars last year said they avoided foreign-badged cars specifically because where they were made, according to a J.D. Power study published Thursday.

That was the highest level since the study began in 2003.

At the same time, the number of car buyers who declined to purchase a domestic model because it was made in America dropped to an all-time low 6 percent.

A?"buy-American sentiment" that has been growing since the onset of the Great Recession of 2007 may be partly responsible, along with the rising quality and reliability of U.S.-made cars, said?Jon Osborn, research director at J.D. Power.

The study also found that word-of-mouth is typically a critical factor in the choice a car buyer makes, yet?conventional wisdom about which brands have the best quality may be sorely out of date. the study found that 40 percent of?buyers said?they steered clear of one brand or another because of what they had?heard about quality, rather than actually checking for the latest data.

The so-called "Avoider Study" also found that fuel economy is now the most influential factor in choosing ? or avoiding ? a product, though factors like price and styling are also strongly influential.

?The fact that so many new-vehicle buyers may be basing their opinions about quality and reliability on pre-conceived notions, rather than concrete information or data, demonstrates how important it is for automakers to promote the quality and reliability of their models,? said Osborn, research director at J.D. Power and Associates.

That?s especially significant for brands that have experienced ?marked improvements? in recent years, Osborn said, such as Ford and Hyundai, where word-of-mouth might lag the brands? reality.? He suggested those makers must proactively tell their quality story, ?rather than just waiting for perceptions to change over time.?

The study, which relied on responses from more than 24,000 buyers of 2011 vehicles, found a dramatic shift under way when it came to consumer attitudes toward a vehicle?s place of origin.?In recent decades, there was a strong and growing trend favoring imports.? But the pendulum appears to be reversing direction.?

The latest study was initiated about the time gas prices had just begin dropping from their 2011 peak, so it may not be a surprise that fuel economy was the single biggest factor in choosing or avoiding a particular model, according to the Power report, ?surpassing the influence of other key reasons such as reliability, the deal and exterior styling, which were the most influential purchase reasons in 2010.?

But price and styling were still significant factors ? especially when it came to the new battery-car niche.?In fact, the Avoider Study discovered that price was the single biggest reason shoppers steered clear of the roughly $40,000 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid (despite an available?$7,500 federal tax credit), while exterior styling were the single-biggest turn-offs for those who might have otherwise purchased a Nissan Leaf battery-electric vehicle or Toyota Prius hybrid.

Performance was another turn-off, especially with the Prius, Power reports.

The Day After Raw: Your Tweets for Jan. 24, 2011

The entire WWE roster readied for the Royal Rumble's over-the-top rope scenario this Sunday by going just that - like Sly Stallone in an arm wrestling tournament - on Raw SuperShow. The 25th anniversary of the Rumble is just around the bend, and the WWE Universe is clamoring to see what a retributive, grim-faced John Cena has planned for Kane and if The Miz can prove that he's truly "No. 1" in the 30-man joust.

It's the day after Raw. Let's see what you thought ...

    Johnny be mad!
Moments after watching his friend, Zack Ryder, carted off in an ambulance, the regret on John Cena's face slowly dissipated in lieu of the meanest mug ever seen on the Cenation leader. Kane chokeslammed Ryder through Raw's steel stage, seriously injuring Long Island Iced-Z and simultaneously breaking something inside of Cena. It took the vilest act committed by The Big Red Monster since his return to trigger a darker side of the 12-time World Champion to (literally) show its face.

Though he may not look the part (unlike his grotesquely masked enemy), Cena has been involved in WWE's most vicious matches - from Hell in a Cell to the Elimination Chamber. He's been through hell and it looks like he's ready to go there one more time when he faces Kane at the Rumble.

@DeaconKirby: I gotta ask @TheRock, are you scared of Angry John Cena ? #raw

@dickiegreenlee: "Yes, Cena, yes... Now release your hatred and your journey towards the dark side will be complete!" #Raw

@DAsharpshooters: When John Cena gets super angry, he turns into Vigo from Ghostbusters 2. #wwe #Raw

@justinruff: I woke my wife up to see Angry Cena face. #Raw

@WrestlePassion: Broken back? Big damn deal. Cena came back from a ruptured spine in my day. #Raw

@samuelamer: John Cena finally embrace the hate, CM Punk GTS's Johnny Ace, Y2J finally say a word. Raw this week was awesome (y) @WWE #RAW

@The_Dalyxman: Damn. John Cena making the rules around here. I like it. @WWE #RAW

@Amirul71711: I can smell the heel of John Cena #raw

@justinruff: Anybody else love that Cena "angry face"? It looks like he channeled Vince. #Raw

@GingerPimpernel: Moral of this #Raw: Cena kept his cool when Kane killed Ryder, but Josh Matthews made him so angry he couldn't hold it in anymore. @WWE #WWE

@TalentedInk: Was that Cena's angry man face? #RAW

The Miz earns the No. 1 spot in the 2012 Royal Rumble MatchThe Miz is No. 1
Speaking of infernal damnation, it seems The Miz has a slim chance in hell to once again headline WrestleMania. The former WWE Champion can make it to the marquee main event in Miami but first he'll need to surpass 29 other combatants in the Royal Rumble Match - from start to finish. His loss to R-Truth "earned" Miz the No. 1 spot in Sunday's all-important battle, putting The Awesome One at a large disadvantage in St. Louis. Of course, No. 2 isn't much luckier, but there's a very distinct psychological pressure that the first entrant must endure, even if such a struggle has been overcome in the past. (Historical Rumble Match photos)

The Miz should spend the next few days studying the 1995 Rumble Match - not because of Pamela Anderson's cameo appearance but rather to takes notes on Shawn Michaels' end-to-end winning performance. You can start here, Miz: Watch HBK win the Rumble. Prepare to dangle for dear No. 1 contendership!

@aj0314: THE MIZ IS ALWAYS #1 IN EVERYTHING, BUT IN THE ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH?! WELL, THE MIZ WILL GO SHAWN MICHAELS ON EVERYONE!!! AWESOME!!! #WWE #RAW

@brendon_bryant: Dear lord.....please let me see The Miz win the Royal Rumble in person. #Raw

@SAVE_US_GSM: If William Regal doesn't compete in the Royal Rumble on Sunday, I'm rioting. #Raw

    @MatthewAcosta: I want R-Truth's new T-Shirt haha #RAW #WWE

    @jenbearbaby: R-Truth sporting a "Little Jimmy Says" t-shirt. I know what I'm buying next time I enter wweshop.com! @WWE #RAW

    @MarkinOut: A Royal Rumble doesn't really seem like a Royal Rumble without Shawn Michaels. #WWE #Raw #HallOfFame

@AwesomeMizfit48: OMG!!!!!! I am sooo Mad!!!! No the Miz can do it!!!! He will last n win the Royal Rumble!!! #BeMiz #Raw

     Laurinaitis' red robeRoad Warrior "Ace"
It wasn't red, spike-laden shoulder pads that WWE EVP and Interim Raw GM John Laurinaitis wore into battle against WWE Champion CM Punk. No, unlike Laurinaitis' brother, Road Warrior Animal, the executive came adorned in a silky, choir-inspired robe but in an appropriate shade of scarlet red, perhaps in homage to the legendary Legion of Doom. The clash never took place between "Ace" and Punk, who let the cat out of the bag about Laurinaitis' fraternal ties one week earlier (Read WWE.com's interview with Animal). Nonetheless, what a rrushhh it was to see the WWE Champion lay out his own boss with a GTS! Will this impact the Interim GM's performance view by a returning Triple H on the next Raw.

@BigMastadon: I think we all know that fax was from Hugh Hefner asking for his robe back. #wwe #raw

@PhantomLordNYC: @WWERawGM man that robe looks swank. Haters gonna hate. #raw

@ericktumang: What's up with @WWERawGM's wizard robe? Is he going to help the Hobbits bring the ring to Mordor? #RAW

@JKourie009: #GTS to freaking John Laurinaitis!!!!!!! Haven't enjoyed one of those for a long time!!! @WWE #Raw

@WWE_Fever: Now Johnny Ace wants to be a good guy huh?? I think he is intimidated by what's gonna happen when HHH gives his review next week on #Raw.

@WWERawGM: I've got a front row seat to hot tag team action. Exciting. Creative. Laurinaitis. #raw #wwe #bigjohnny

@RAMelok: John Laurinaitis totally ripping off Teddy Long with this match. #TagTeamMatchPlaya #Raw

@randomedian: That idiot Laurinaitis didn't even change his expression when he got lifted up for the GTS. #RAW

    @WWERockCena: Send John Laurinaitis packing Triple H! #WWE #Raw

@Smalls0629: The real reason the CM Punk vs. John Laurinaitis match won't happen tonight is because it's 11:08. #Raw

The Real Housewives of Atlanta Recap: NeNe Tries to Bring Marlo to Africa, Kim Tries to Lose Weight

The Real Housewives of Atlanta are headed to South Africa, but apparently not before an entire episode dedicated to prep and packing. We recap who's staying, who's going, and who's itching for a fight in our THG +/- review.

NeNe's spending more time with her new BFF Marlo.

NeNe admits that they're both label whores; they bond over shopping and shoes. Marlo gives NeNe a tour of her home and I have to say, if Marlo sleeps with men to make her money she's obviously very successful at it.

    NeNe and Marlo

She even gives her new gal pal one of her many Chanel bags even after NeNe calls Chanel an old lady bag. What are friends for? Plus 8.

NeNe's still waffling about whether to go to Africa and Marlo says she'd love to go on the trip ... so NeNe invites her along. Minus 10. Can NeNe do that? Hasn't Phaedra organized this trip? Yup but that doesn't stop NeNe from telling Marlo to come along.

Across town we've got the shape up wars. Both Kandi and Kim have to lose a few pounds but their going about it in completely different ways.

Kandi gets her self a power trainer who put her on a scale and then runs her through a boot camp style obstacle course. Plus 12. If she can keep that kind of workout up she'll be in killer shape.

Kroy tells Kim exercise is the only way to go. Kim's got other ideas. The quick fix girl gets a slim wrap that makes her look like a mummy on a trampoline.

To her credit she loses over 10 inches. Of course Kroy's no fool and knows you don't lose five pounds of fat by wrapping yourself in ace bandages. The water weight will be back in a couple of days but 10 inches gone looks good to Kim.

So how does she celebrate? With pizza of course. Plus 10. I love Kim.

    Kim Zolciak Underwear Pic

Kroy's got to head to training camp for a month and the two of them are a little love sick at the thought of it. Kim plans a romantic evening at home.

If only she hadn't employed her parents to help her get it set up. The bath has bubbles and rose petals. She and Kroy are lit by candlelight and then Kim's dad walks in and tells them to be careful or name the kid after him. Minus 15.

That was worse than a mood killer. That was almost creepy.

Cynthia and Peter are still working on communicating better. All I see is Peter being pouty because she's running off to Africa without him and Cythina's glowing at the thought of getting away.

Cynthia laments that the last time she was in Africa she was too broke to see very much. This time she's going to enjoy the real Africa ... apparently that means high end hotels and upscale safaris. I think she needs to check her definition of real. Minus 8.

Phaedra prepares for the trip and Apollo gets ready for daddy day care as it will be just the boys for 10 days. Plus 10 because little Ayden is just too darn cute.

Phaedra's a little worried about NeNe coming along, little does she know that she's bringing some backup.

    Phaedra and Apollo Photo

As everyone heads to the airport, NeNe's the last to arrive…but wait. Here comes Marlo. Plus 13 for the looks on their faces. Sheree and Phaedra are practically catching flies their jaws drop so low.

Kandi thinks NeNe felt like she needed some muscle and  it looks like Marlo's her enforcer in heels.

EPISODE TOTAL: +20! SEASON TOTAL: -209!

Next week, the safari officially begins and the claws come out. Let's see how many of the Real Housewives make it back to Atlanta in one piece.

Jane Eisner: Where Are the Jewish Women?

The article first appeared in The Jewish Daily Forward.

A recent front-page story in the New York Times that discussed gender issues in Israel opened with a telling anecdote: The winner of a major honor was not permitted onstage at a government-sponsored awards ceremony because she was a woman. The disappearance of women from too many stages of public life in Israel has become a roiling controversy in a society that holds fast to egalitarian values while trying to accommodate the increasing demands of religious fundamentalists.

The absence of women in American Jewish public life may be less dramatic than in Israel, but it is no less troubling. As the Forward has documented, women lead only a sliver of the major Jewish nonprofits, and their overall earnings are dwarfed by their male counterparts. But the problem goes deeper: Too many public discussions, events and programs hosted by the Jewish community have few or no women participating. A couple of recent examples include the annual human rights dinner of the Jewish Labor Committee (no women honored or speaking) and a multi-part lecture series sponsored by the JCC Boston which had no women speakers until an outcry added one.

In both of these instances, the organizers of the events expressed sincere regret, argued that this snapshot does not represent their fuller inclusion of women, and promised that it won't happen again. We believe them. Unlike in Israel, where some rabbis and political leaders lean on their own interpretation of Jewish law to formally exclude women, the problem in America is more a sin of omission. We didn't realize how skewed the program had become! We couldn't find the right women to participate!

These explanations would carry more weight, however, if the problem was brand new or never before noticed. It is not. Back in 2006 -- after a major conference on the future of the Jewish people failed to include a single woman -- Shifra Bronznick, founding president of Advancing Women Professionals and the Jewish Community, began asking men to pledge not to participate on all-male panels and to make the inclusion of at least one woman a condition of involvement. Despite the indefatigable efforts of Bronznick and her colleague Rabbi Joanna Samuels, the absence of women in public conversations continues.

And that is not only because women are not included. Too often, women absent themselves from the discussion. At a recent breakfast hosted by the Israel Policy Forum (with a woman moderator and an all-male panel of experts) not a single woman in the audience asked a question. A brief survey conducted at the Forward in the fall of 2010 found that men sent in unsolicited opinion pieces at a rate seven times higher than women.

Clearly, the Jewish community is not having the discussion it needs and deserves. It can't, when half the population is silenced or silencing itself. To more fully address this issue, the Forward is reaching out to you, our readers, to send examples of the absence of women in your own communities to feedback@forward.com, which we will publish for further debate. And we will hold ourselves and our colleagues accountable, too. That New York Times story mentioned above quoted many men -- but only one woman -- about gender issues in Israel, a subject that women surely know something about.

Shaul Kelner, a professor at Vanderbilt University, has written about his own commitment to AWP's pledge, calling it a "mitzvah of egalitarianism." Surely, including more women in the American Jewish conversation can be viewed as both an obligation and a blessing.

    Barca awaits Real Madrid again

    By PAUL LOGOTHETIS

    AP Sports Writer

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 1:08 p.m. ET Jan. 23, 2012

MADRID (AP) -Real Madrid will likely abandon its defensive strategy and go on the attack against Barcelona in the second leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has come under fire for his choice of tactics following last week's 2-1 loss to Barcelona, with the Portuguese coach repeatedly jeered during a 4-1 league win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

But that victory displayed the potent attack available to Madrid, which leads Barcelona by five points in the Spanish league after scoring 67 goals in 19 games to complete the first half of the season.

Still, Mourinho did not apologize for Madrid's approach to the first leg, which has polarized much of the Portuguese coach's support, not only among fans but also the usually staunch Madrid press. On Sunday, Marca newspaper reported divisions inside the club's dressing room while Mourinho's name was jeered throughout the Bilbao match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium for the first time since his arrival in 2010.

"Whoever says the changing room is divided or that some kind of fracture exists is lying," Sergio Ramos wrote on Twitter on Monday, a day after revelations of an argument between the Madrid defender and Mourinho were reported. "This is a great group that is well united, regardless what is said."

Madrid's attack could get a boost if Argentina forward Angel di Maria returns from injury.

Defender Pepe's availability is uncertain after the Portugal international was benched against Bilbao following the fallout from his stamp on Lionel Messi's hand in the first leg.

Madrid has won only one of its last 13 meetings against Barcelona - April's Copa del Rey final - with nine losses over that period.

Barcelona is coming off a 4-1 league win at Malaga in which Messi notched his 10th career league hat trick for the European champions. Messi now has 36 goals in all competitions this season, while teammate Alexis Sanchez has also found his rhythm with the Spanish champions, the Chile forward scoring three goals in his last four games.

"They lead the league, they can still reach the semifinals of the Copa and they are into the next round of the Champions League. From an outside perspective, it's hard to read whether or not they have problems," Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta said on Monday.

Also, Mirandes needs to beat Espanyol to become the first third division club to reach the semifinals since Fugueres in 2002. Mirandes trails 3-2 going into Tuesday's match at its 6,000-capacity Andova Municipal stadium.

Meanwhile, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao hold comfortable leads going into their away return legs.

Valencia travels across town to Levante on Thursday holding a 4-1 advantage and Bilbao is 2-0 up ahead of its game at Mallorca on Wednesday.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Four years after the GOP's rallying cry became "drill, baby, drill," environmental issues have barely registered a blip in this Republican presidential primary.

That's likely to change as the race turns to Florida.

The candidates' positions on environmental regulation, global warming as well as clean air and water are all but certain to get attention ahead of the Jan. 31 primary in a state where the twin issues of offshore oil drilling and Everglades restoration are considered mandatory topics for discussion.

"It's almost like eating fried cheese in Iowa," said Jerry Karnas of the Everglades Foundation. Drilling has long been banned off Florida's coasts because of fears that a spill would foul its beaches, wrecking the tourism industry, while the federal and state governments are spending billions to clean the Everglades.

Though most expect the candidates to express support for Everglades restoration ? as Mitt Romney did in his 2008 campaign ? environmentalists are noting a further rightward shift overall among the GOP field. The candidates have called for fewer environmental regulations, questioned whether global warming is a hoax and criticized the agency that implements and enforces clean air and water regulations.

"A cycle ago, there were people who actually believed in solving some of these problems," said Navin Nayak of the League of Conservation Voters. "Now we're faced with a slate that doesn't even believe in basic science."

The candidates, of course, dispute such a characterization. But their stances have generally grown more conservative. And even when they haven't, they often offer positions that aren't in line with conservationists.

?Romney heralded the passage of stricter limits on carbon emissions in 2005 when he was governor of Massachusetts but last year said it was a mistake. He previously agreed with the scientific consensus on global warming and humans' contribution to it but now says "we don't know what's causing climate change."

?Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich supported tougher environmental regulation early in his congressional career and appeared in a 2008 TV spot with then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pleading for action on climate change. Now he's says appearing with the San Francisco liberal was "the dumbest thing I've done in the last couple of years" and is calling for lifting restrictions on offshore drilling and branding the Environmental Protection Agency a "job killer" that must be replaced.

?Texas Rep. Ron Paul said during his 2008 campaign that "human activity probably does play a role" in global warming. Now he calls the science on manmade global warming a "hoax."

?Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum shows fewer signs of a shift on such issues. He has called for more drilling, including in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and doubts research that points to a human role in global warming, calling it "junk science."

An analysis by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics found about $2.8 million in campaign donations were made by those in the energy and natural resources sector, according to Federal Elections Commission data, with about 84 percent of it going to Republicans.

Meantime, the EPA, which is responsible for policing environmental rules, has been singled out for Republican criticism this campaign season. Paul has called for its outright elimination as part of his plan to drastically curtail the federal government. Romney has said it's "out of control." Santorum has railed against the EPA's limits on mercury from coal-fired power plants. And Gingrich has called for overhauling the EPA, saying it should be converted to an "environmental solutions agency."

Nayak says: "There's no doubt that this kind of slate of presidential candidates is one of the most regressive and most closely tied to polluters that we've seen at least in decades."

Some Republican presidents and nominees have been strong environmentalists. Teddy Roosevelt was seen as a role model to environmentalists, using his presidency to establish wildlife refuges, preserve forests, and conserve water. Richard Nixon helped create the EPA that has been vilified by his successors on the campaign trail today. And the last Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain, was the chief co-sponsor of a bill that sought mandatory caps on greenhouse gas emissions.

Michelle Pautz, a political science professor at the University of Dayton who focuses on environmental policy, said the current slate of Republicans may not be giving much reason to applaud their environmental stances, but it may not matter much overall with the economy taking center stage.

"The bottom line is both with the GOP primary and looking to Obama and the general election, the green vote is a non-issue," Pautz said. "There are too many other issues crowding out the environmental ones."

But Tony Cani, the national political director for the Sierra Club, said taking what he calls "extreme" views on the environment won't play well come Nov. 6.

"They're going to be hurt with young voters, women, families, Latino voters," Cani said.

Jim DiPeso, of Republicans for Environmental Protection, said he hopes to see a shift as Election Day draws closer, but that the state of politics right now has made ecological issues untouchable.

"A lot of the more pragmatic mainstream Republicans just are trying to steer clear of the issue because it's become so politically fraught," he said.
