WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? New Zealand police say a woman faked being pregnant for nine months before snatching a newborn from a hospital and whisking it to a getaway car. She was caught when a suspicious nurse followed her out of the hospital.
Police spokeswoman Ana-Mari Gates-Bowey says 24-year-old Neha Narayan has been charged with abduction and faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
Gates-Bowey says Narayan told her partner she was pregnant months before walking into an Auckland hospital Jan. 3 and snatching a 2-day-old baby.
Gates-Bowey says Narayan made it out of the hospital and to a car where her partner was waiting, before the suspicious nurse caught up to her.
Narayan has handed authorities her Fijian passport and was released on bail. She could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
